After nearly a decade of thrilling adventures, memorable pairings, and even a fondness for Eggo waffles, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is almost here – and fans are bracing themselves for the epic conclusion.
The town is under military lockdown, strange rifts are appearing, and Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) remains a powerful threat. The adventurers will need all the assistance they can find as they prepare for their dangerous mission.
Stranger Things has always focused on the strong bonds between friends and family, and how those relationships are affected by the show’s mysteries. Now, one of the younger actors will have a more significant role to play in the unfolding story.
Holly Wheeler, Mike and Nancy Wheeler’s younger sister, is coming to the show! A new actor will be playing her on Netflix’s popular sci-fi series.
Here’s an update on the recasting of Holly and her role in the upcoming fifth movie.
Why was Holly Wheeler recast in Stranger Things season 5?

Holly Wheeler has been a part of the story since the beginning, seeing how Joyce Byers’s home was affected by the monster from another dimension that was looking for Will in the first season.
The character of the youngest Wheeler child, originally played by twin actresses Anniston and Tinsley Price starting in 2016, has visibly matured alongside the show’s four seasons.
Season 5 of Stranger Things takes place in the fall of 1987, about a year after the emotional events of season 4 (we still miss Eddie Munson!). This means there’s another time jump for viewers to keep track of.
Adjusting the characters’ ages makes sense, as the actors have grown up during production delays. However, this doesn’t apply to the characters who play the twins.
Now that Holly is getting older and will have a bigger part in the show – moving from a smaller role to being a main character – the creators have decided to find a new actress who is older and has more acting experience to play her.
I’ve noticed a cool trend in Stranger Things – they’re really expanding the roles of these family members we already know and love. Take Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair, Lucas’s sister. She first popped up in season 2, but seasons 3 and 4 really let her shine! She’s so quick-witted and sassy, and I’m glad they’ve given her more to do.
The trailer showed a quick glimpse of us hiding underwater, and there’s much more of the story to come. It was a fantastic experience to film.
Who is playing Holly Wheeler in Stranger Things season 5?

For the fifth season, the creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, have cast Nell Fisher, known for her role in Evil Dead Rise, as the youngest of the Wheeler children.
Her work on the fifth movie in the popular horror series likely influenced the casting decision, particularly because the show Stranger Things has frequently included nods to Evil Dead over its four seasons.
Matt Duffer, one of the show’s creators, recently told SFX that Holly will play a significant role this season. He explained that this is largely to explore an important theme.
The Duffer brothers aimed to recreate the atmosphere of the show’s first season, something they felt was difficult to do since their own children have grown up. As they explained, a lot of that original feeling comes from having young kids themselves.
It struck me how much Holly and her friends have grown up, so bringing them back into the series was a real joy. It let us tap back into that youthful energy and recapture some of those earlier feelings we all loved.
Hopefully, the last season avoids the trend of sidelining interesting characters only to have something bad happen to them. We’ve seen it before with characters like Bob, Billy, and Eddie, and it would be great if the writers broke that pattern this time around.
What could happen to Holly Wheeler in Stranger Things season 5?

Based on what we’ve seen, Netflix isn’t afraid to put Eleven through difficult and challenging experiences.
The first preview of the upcoming episodes showed a close-up of Holly hugging her mother, both of them looking shocked at something they’re watching.
In the new season, Karen and Holly share a frightening scene underwater. A preview showed them desperately hiding in a bathtub while a Demogorgon attacks the Wheeler house, searching for anyone inside.
The announcement of episode titles for Stranger Things season 5 has sparked theories among fans. Many believe episode 2, currently titled “The Vanishing of…”, is actually called “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler,” leading them to suspect Holly Wheeler might be the one who disappears this season.
This would be a direct callback to season 1’s The Vanishing of Will Byers.
With the story reaching its climax, viewers are hoping the Wheeler family makes it through the final confrontation!
Stranger Things 5 part 1 premieres on Netflix on Wednesday 26th November 2025.
