The MCU’s Best Phase 4 Addition Is Confirmed to Be Returning (But Will They Stick Around This Time?)

Marvel is finding it difficult to create consistently successful movies and shows. Despite hoping to build a multi-film series with Eternals, the movie didn’t perform well with audiences or critics. Several of their Disney+ series, like Echo and Secret Invasion, also failed to gain traction, and that’s just part of the problem. Fortunately, not everything has missed the mark; projects like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and both seasons of Loki have been positive additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The journeys of Sam Wilson and Loki are compelling because they hint at major future events. Sam ultimately becomes the new Captain America in his series, and Loki realizes his true calling is safeguarding the multiverse. However, not all Disney+ characters get such significant developments. In fact, despite having another appearance planned, the MCU’s standout character from Phase Four is still waiting for their big moment to shine.

The MCU Introduces a Great Character in a Little-Known Phase Four Project

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four has focused on building out its mystical side. The movie Eternals introduced Dane Whitman, who comic book fans know as the Black Knight, a hero who fights with a magical sword called the Ebony Blade. A quick appearance by Blade suggests we might see a version of the Midnight Suns storyline in the future. Another piece of this puzzle is the Disney+ special Werewolf by Night. It centers around a competition after the head of the Bloodstone family dies, drawing monster hunters from around the world to compete for the powerful Bloodstone gem. However, Jack Russell, the werewolf, isn’t interested in winning; he just wants to rescue a friend who is also being hunted during the competition.

When Jack arrives, he finds Ted, also known as Man-Thing – a large creature from the swamp who avoids conflict but will defend himself if attacked. Jack and Ted join forces with Elsa Bloodstone, and their plan mostly succeeds in getting them through the night. The only real problem occurs when they’re cornered, and Ted is forced to destroy one of their pursuers. This incident hints at Man-Thing’s hidden power, but it seems unlikely that power will ever be fully explored unless the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes significant changes.

Man-Thing Is More Than a Side Character

It’s been over three years since Werewolf by Night came out, leading many to believe Marvel Studios has moved on from that story. However, a sequel is actually in development, and director Michael Giacchino recently confirmed he’s still very enthusiastic about it. While it’s unclear what role Man-Thing will play, he remained a loyal companion to Jack in the first special, suggesting their partnership will continue. Still, Man-Thing deserves a chance to be more than just a supporting character.

Man-Thing has been part of several superhero teams in the comics, like the Midnight Suns and the Avengers of the Supernatural, and even the Thunderbolts. This last team connection is interesting because the current version of the MCU’s Thunderbolts is actually the New Avengers. This could open the door for Ted (Man-Thing) to join the team and finally appear in a major movie, showcasing his abilities to a wider audience. That would be much better than being relegated to minor appearances in less popular parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Werewolf by Night is streaming on Disney+.
