New artwork featuring Mahershala Ali as Blade highlights what Marvel fans have been waiting for, especially since the movie has faced delays. When Ali was first cast in 2019, many expected the film to be released much sooner, but six years later, it still hasn’t materialized and, unfortunately, doesn’t seem close to happening anytime soon.
The movie Blade has faced a lot of changes, including losing actors like Aaron Pierre, who is now going to play Green Lantern in the HBO series Lanterns instead of continuing with Marvel. After numerous setbacks and problems during production, Blade was put on hold indefinitely and removed from Marvel’s upcoming release plans. That’s why the recent artwork featuring Ali as Blade is generating so much excitement.
On Instagram, artist @70.6ix shared what Mahershala Ali could look like as Blade in the MCU.
Fan art depicts Blade wearing his iconic red sunglasses and black leather jacket. The artwork shows him – a character who is both human and vampire – drinking blood from a bag and carrying a sword. So far, Mahershala Ali has only appeared as Blade briefly through voice acting: he had a vocal cameo in Eternals, and Todd Williams voiced a version of Blade in the animated series Marvel Zombies.

Last June, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, gave an update on the upcoming Blade movie. Initially, Marvel was exploring four different takes on the film – two set in the present day and two historical stories, including one in the 1930s. However, Feige has now confirmed that Blade will be set in the present day.
Kevin Feige explained the issues with the Blade movie’s production, saying Marvel wanted to ensure the script was just right before introducing the character officially into the MCU. He emphasized they didn’t want to rush things and simply put the character in costume to start fighting vampires. Before this, David S. Goyer, the writer of the original Blade films starring Wesley Snipes, shared that he had offered to write the script for the reboot.
Marvel ultimately rejected Goyer’s pitch, explaining they were confident in their current plans. Despite this, the Blade movie is still on hold with no new release date in sight. It’s possible Marvel is waiting until the Multiverse Saga concludes in 2027 – as Blade isn’t tied to the multiverse – before revisiting the project.
Where Mahershala Ali’s Blade Could Appear If His MCU Movie Never Happens
If Marvel decides to postpone or cancel Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie, there are still opportunities for him to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He could potentially appear in the next two Avengers films before the character is recast with a new actor for a planned reboot of the franchise in 2027 with Avengers: Secret Wars.
Mahershala Ali could potentially play Blade as part of the Midnight Sons, a team of supernatural heroes. Given the growing number of teams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe like the New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, the Midnight Sons would be a great way to unite all of Marvel’s horror-themed characters. If a standalone Blade movie doesn’t move forward, Ali could be a strong leader for this team.
