When someone mentions Charles Bronson, I always think of his most memorable role, and surprisingly, it’s not from a classic Western like The Magnificent Seven or Once Upon a Time in the West, or even The Great Escape. It’s his Death Wish series, particularly the explosive Death Wish 3 from 1985.
I’ve enjoyed this movie as a guilty pleasure for forty years, ever since seeing it with friends after school during my junior year at an AMC marathon. It’s a really fun, over-the-top film, quite a departure from the more dramatic ones that came before. It’s often ridiculous, but I still love it, especially the story of Paul Kersey taking on a New York City gang ten years after being exiled.

Okay, So What Is Death Wish 3 About?
Picking up a few years after Death Wish 2 (which we recommend watching first), this film sees Paul Kersey – an architect who became a vigilante – return to New York City, only to be quickly accused of murder. After being cleared, Paul is offered a deal: eliminate as many street criminals as possible and share information about bigger crimes with the police, who will then take the credit.
In the film “Mr. Vigilante,” Paul Kersey takes on a dangerous street gang headed by Manny Fraker, determined to clean up the city and protect innocent people. His quest for revenge involves the use of powerful weapons like machine guns and even a rocket launcher.

It’s Not The Best Charles Bronson Movie, But It’s So Much Fun
While Death Wish 3 isn’t Charles Bronson’s finest work, or even the best in the Death Wish series, it’s a ridiculously fun and over-the-top action movie that escalates into complete chaos. It’s a film where you’ll see a 64-year-old Bronson blasting a machine gun down a New York City street, with someone literally running behind him carrying ammunition in a cardboard box – you won’t find that anywhere else!
I watch Death Wish 3 simply for fun. While Once Upon a Time in the West is a cinematic masterpiece with fantastic characters and beautiful visuals, I’d honestly prefer watching Paul Kersey’s action-packed scenes with his gun in Death Wish 3.

There Are Multiple Scenes I Think About All The Time
There’s a lot to enjoy in Death Wish 3, from Paul Kersey briefly stepping away from dinner to deal with two criminals who were outmatched, to his bold walk down the street with a machine gun, and even the way he handles a gangster wearing a bulletproof vest.
I’ve loved this over-the-top action movie for twenty years, and certain scenes are still vividly stuck in my head.

Before finishing, it’s important to note that very few films celebrate violence as much as Death Wish 3. The enthusiastic reactions from the neighborhood when Paul Kersey kills a gang member are really shocking!
