Edgar Wright is known for his unique style, especially his work on the comic book-inspired film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Despite his success, he hasn’t directed a movie for Marvel or DC. He was originally set to direct Ant-Man for Marvel, but left due to disagreements about the film’s direction. Since then, he’s focused on original projects like Baby Driver and The Running Man. Many fans would be thrilled to see Wright direct a big-budget superhero film, but he’d need to have the right level of creative control to make it happen.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Edgar Wright if he’d be interested in directing a DC Studios project, noting James Gunn’s aim to create a more director-driven environment. Wright responded that it would depend on the project itself. He explained that he’s drawn to opportunities where he can establish a unique vision, like those who helmed the first installments of iconic franchises. He cited Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins as examples of films that were both huge successes and distinctly personal, showcasing a director’s individual style even within a large studio system.
Wright explained that he left the Ant-Man project because, after eight years of development, Marvel had established a very specific formula for its movies – not just in terms of story continuity, but also in terms of visual style and how things were filmed. He felt this approach, which relied heavily on second unit and VFX work, wouldn’t allow him to make the film in the same creative way he’d made Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Elseworlds Could Be Edgar Wright’s Ticket Into DC Studios

As a huge movie fan, I’ve always admired Edgar Wright’s incredibly distinctive style. You really hire him to let him be Edgar Wright, you know? There are definitely examples of directors with a strong vision – like James Gunn with the Guardians of the Galaxy films and Superman – who’ve managed to bring their personality to big franchise movies. But it’s a tough tightrope walk. I’m a little worried about how Wright will fit into James Gunn’s DCU. Even though Gunn seems to be giving filmmakers some creative freedom – that Clayface project sounds interesting – there’s still a whole established continuity to consider, and that could really limit what Wright can do.
If James Gunn’s main DC Universe doesn’t work out for director Edgar Wright, he could still potentially work with DC Studios. Gunn is considering an “Elseworlds” label for projects that exist outside the main DC storyline – similar to how it’s done in the comics. This would allow filmmakers like Matt Reeves (with The Batman Part II) to create their vision without needing to tie it into Gunn’s overall DC Universe plan. If this approach succeeds and doesn’t confuse viewers (DC Studios is also making The Brave and the Bold Batman movie), directing an Elseworlds film could be a good fit for Wright, giving him full creative control.
I’d absolutely love to see Edgar Wright tackle a DC Elseworlds film! He’s consistently proven he can create incredibly stylish and exciting action sequences – his visual flair is amazing. He clearly knows how to make a really fun genre movie, so imagining him with a DC character is thrilling. While the big heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman are probably already spoken for in the new DCU, I’m hoping Gunn and Wright will dig into the DC archives and give a more obscure character a chance to shine. It would be so cool to see him take a risk on someone unexpected!
After the lukewarm reception to his film The Running Man, director Edgar Wright could benefit from a project that reignites his career. He might consider revisiting his successful collaborations with Simon Pegg, but a partnership with DC Studios could also be a path to success. While the finale of Peacemaker Season 2 sparked debate, the new direction at DC under James Gunn is promising and has fans eager to see what’s next. Allowing Wright to direct a large-scale superhero film would further boost excitement around DC’s plans.
