Squid Game’s American spin-off with esteemed Hollywood director gets massive production update

Okay, so that Cate Blanchett appearance at the very end of Squid Game’s last season totally blew my mind! It’s got me thinking – where does the show go from here? Is Netflix planning to build out this whole universe with spin-offs or something? I’m really curious to see what they do next.

For a long time, there have been whispers about an American version of the show, but we never got official word from the creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, or director David Fincher – it was just a hopeful idea. Now, it looks like it’s actually going to happen, and we have reason to be really excited!

Although Netflix hasn’t officially announced it, observant fans have noticed a significant production detail and a possible title for the new series: Squid Game: America.

The show’s title and expected start date have been announced on the Film and Television Industry Alliance website. Production is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles on February 26, 2026.

Details about how the show is being made haven’t been officially announced yet. However, it’s known that Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, is producing it with David Fincher, Zeus Zamani, and Rhett Giles. Dennis Kelly, who wrote Matilda the Musical, is writing the show, and Cate Blanchett will be starring in it.

The show is an American adaptation of the popular Korean series. It takes place in the same universe, but focuses on how the deadly games play out in the United States.

The announcement didn’t offer much that fans hadn’t already guessed – it’s essentially an American adaptation of the show. We’ll have to wait and see how American culture and current events are woven into the plot. However, if it follows the original, it won’t just be about violence and betrayal; it will likely also explore themes of wealth and power dynamics.

Following the season 3 finale of Squid Game, director Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed rumors about Cate Blanchett’s role potentially leading to an American adaptation. He told Variety that there’s no connection between the two.

My main goal was to create a powerful conclusion to the story, and that was really all I was focused on. I haven’t received any official word from Netflix about David Fincher working on a “Squid Game” project, although I’ve definitely heard the rumors. Ultimately, I just wanted a satisfying ending for season 3.

He also discussed how he pictured Cate Blanchett in that final scene, explaining that it came to him near the end of writing the script and he carefully considered who would be the best choice for the role.

I specifically requested a female recruiter because I was looking for a fresh perspective and a stronger impression. Since it’s a brief on-screen moment, I wanted someone with a captivating presence who could immediately command attention.

Everyone on the team, including me, is a huge admirer of Cate Blanchett, so we were all very eager to work with her. We didn’t offer the role to that actor until after filming had already started.

It’s currently unknown if characters from the original series, such as The Frontman (Lee Byung-hun), will appear in the new American version. We’ll have to wait for more information.
