Okay, so I’m really excited about this! Jimmy McGovern’s brilliant series Time is coming back for a third season, and this time, David Tennant is taking the lead. I thought the first two seasons were fantastic, and I have a feeling he’s going to absolutely kill it in this new chapter. Definitely one to watch!
I really enjoyed the first season of this prison drama when it came out in 2021 – Sean Bean was fantastic as Mark Cobden, a seemingly gentle inmate, and Stephen Graham delivered a powerfully conflicted performance as the guard, Eric McNally. Then, in 2023, they shifted gears with a new season focusing on a women’s prison, and brought in Jodie Whittaker, Tamara Lawrance, and Bella Ramsey to lead the story. It was a smart move that kept things fresh.
The new installment will take place in a juvenile detention center and will examine how imprisonment affects teenagers, as well as the people who work there.
David Tennant will star as Prison Officer Bailey. Siobhan Finneran, known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Happy Valley, will return as Marie-Louise, the prison chaplain who has appeared in the last two seasons.

Marie-Louise, a prison chaplain who’s lost her faith, begins working at a young offender institution. When a tragedy occurs, she finds herself at odds with Bailey, a long-serving officer also struggling with personal issues. Bailey holds crucial information about what happened, but whether he’ll reveal it before being overwhelmed by guilt remains to be seen.
Peter and James, two teenage offenders, are trying to cope with the frightening reality of being in prison. James wonders if he can face his family after a terrible act, and Peter wrestles with whether to reveal the truth about a man’s death, even if it means betraying his family. As they form an unexpected friendship, they both hope for a better future, but the harsh prison environment makes change seem impossible.
According to McGovern, Siobhan Finneran is returning, and the production has cast David Tennant as the lead. With Paul Whittington directing, McGovern believes the project will be excellent.
The latest season of Time was created by Jimmy McGovern, known for shows like Unforgivable, Cracker, and The Street, and Samuel Bailey, a playwright whose play Shook also takes place in a youth correctional facility.
Lindsay Salt, head of BBC Drama, praised Jimmy McGovern’s ability to create impactful and thought-provoking shows that connect with viewers. She announced a third season of ‘Time,’ featuring David Tennant and Siobhan Finneran, with Samuel Bailey as co-writer and Paul Whittington directing. BBC Studios Fiction will produce what they expect to be another compelling and unforgettable drama.
The third season of Time will be released in three one-hour episodes on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. It’s also being made available in North America through a partnership with BritBox.
You can currently watch the first two seasons of Time on BBC iPlayer. Both seasons have been well-received by critics, and the first season won two BAFTAs – for Best Mini-Series and Sean Bean’s performance as Best Actor.
