R-Type Delta is a beloved game from the original PlayStation era. As one of the best shoot ’em ups of its time, it hasn’t been re-released since 2009 on the PlayStation 3, making a new version highly anticipated.
Since this is the first R-Type game with 3D visuals, we were concerned about how well it would hold up with modern HD graphics. Early 3D games often appear blurry or dated when displayed in high definition.
We were particularly impressed by how the game looks. The environments have been beautifully updated with a lot of detail, and it’s surprisingly fun to destroy things within them. The skies are especially gorgeous.
Delta also makes the game much more fun by being much more lenient with collisions. You don’t have to worry about tiny touches against buildings instantly causing a failure, which lets you play more boldly and aggressively. While collisions with enemies can still be tricky, it’s a reasonable part of the gameplay experience.
The game features three unique ships to play as, each offering a different selection of weapons. While this provides variety, choosing certain upgrades can actually make some parts of the game harder.
As a player, one of the things that really stresses me out is when my special attack can’t hit enemies hiding around corners. It sounds small, but because the game doesn’t let you pick up where you left off after dying, failing a few times in a row can totally ruin an entire attempt. It’s frustrating because you have to start all the way back if you mess up!
It’s a small complaint, considering how enjoyable the weapons and special attacks are. Unleashing a massive lightning storm to defeat a boss is especially satisfying.
The game’s new music fits in perfectly, but the sound effects feel a bit outdated. During intense moments, the weapon sounds become muddled and just sound like noise.
As a fan, I can tell you this remaster is fantastic! If you love shoot ’em ups, you absolutely need to check this game out – it’s a must-have.
