The person who helped create the Iron Man movies is now being talked about because of a potential film based on a famous video game set in space. Rumors started circulating online when a well-known source claimed this filmmaker is working on the project.
Jon Favreau rumored to produce a new Zathura movie
A post on X (formerly Twitter) from the account MyTimeToShineHello claimed that Jon Favreau is producing a new Zathura movie, sparking rumors about a potential sequel or reboot. Favreau previously directed the 2005 film Zathura: A Space Adventure, which was based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 2002 book, Zathura.
Zathura: A Space Adventure was produced by William Teitler, Scott Kroopf, and Michael De Luca. The film featured Josh Hutcherson, Jonah Bobo, Dax Shepard, Kristen Stewart, and Tim Robbins. Released by Sony Pictures on November 11, 2005, it earned $65.1 million globally, nearly matching its $65 million production cost.
Jon Favreau relied heavily on real, physical effects in the first movie. Kristen Stewart recalled that things like harpooning walls and creating fire were done for real on set. Pete Travers, the visual effects supervisor, explained the team aimed to capture the classic, 1950s science fiction style of the original book’s illustrations by Chris Van Allsburg.
The studio promoted Zathura as being set in the same world as Jumanji, and Jack Black playfully described it as “the one in space.” The film has received positive reviews, with a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critic Justin Chang even called it the best movie adaptation of a Chris Van Allsburg book so far, highlighting director Jon Favreau’s skillful handling of the story.
Jon Favreau described the release of ‘Zathura’ as a fortunate escape, especially considering the difficulties that followed the hit movie ‘Elf’. Jack Black has suggested he’d be open to revisiting the story in a remake or sequel, and producer Hiram Garcia believes the world of ‘Zathura’ is expansive enough to even include stories set in space. This background is relevant as recent reports indicate Favreau will be producing a new chapter in the ‘Zathura’ story.
