More than forty years ago, Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, changing the world of Shonen manga forever. It quickly became one of the most famous anime and manga series of all time, shaping the entire Shonen genre as we know it. Dragon Ball is remembered not just for its exciting battles and memorable scenes, but also for popularizing many common themes and ideas that continue to inspire manga artists and shows today. Through numerous series, movies, and spin-offs over the years, the franchise has delivered countless amazing moments and unforgettable characters.
The original anime, first released in 1986, quickly became popular around the world, and the franchise has continued to grow ever since with numerous anime series, spin-offs, movies, and video games. Within the series, the Saiyans are the most important characters. First appearing in Dragon Ball Z, they are a legendary warrior race known for their limitless potential and ability to become stronger through intense training and battles. While many powerful Saiyans exist, the following seven are considered the strongest.
7) Kale

Kale, known as the Legendary Super Saiyan, is widely considered the most powerful being in Universe 6. Many believe she’s similar to Broly, sharing the same intense power and transformation. While she often struggles with self-doubt, when enraged, Kale’s power becomes overwhelming – she even exceeded Goku’s Super Saiyan 2 level during the Tournament of Power. However, this uncontrolled fury is dangerous, as she struggles to manage her strength, posing a threat to both opponents and those she’s trying to protect.
6) Future Trunks

Future Trunks first appeared in Dragon Ball Z and became a key character. He returned in Dragon Ball Super with increased strength. While he can’t transform into Super Saiyan 3, he significantly enhanced his Super Saiyan 2 form during his battle with Zamasu. This led to the unique transformation known as Super Saiyan Rage, triggered by extreme anger. This new form gave him the power to fight against the combined threat of Zamasu and Goku Black, potentially matching or surpassing the power of Super Saiyan Blue.
5) Broly

Broly first appeared as a character outside the main storyline in the Dragon Ball Z movies, but was later reworked by Akira Toriyama for the 2018 film Dragon Ball Super: Broly. As a Legendary Super Saiyan, he’s born with incredible power that constantly increases as he fights. This unique form makes him far stronger than Kale, another character with similar abilities. Beyond just being incredibly strong, Broly’s Legendary Super Saiyan form gives him almost unlimited energy and allows him to unleash powerful energy blasts capable of destroying planets.
4) Cumber

Cumber, first appearing in Dragon Ball Super Heroes, is a very old Saiyan who was imprisoned on the Prison Planet by Fu. He’s not only able to transform into Super Saiyan 3, but he’s evolved it into a ‘Full Power’ version, dramatically increasing his strength. This form makes him incredibly powerful, causing his muscles to grow and his eyes to become vacant, similar to a wild, uncontrolled state. Unlike other transformations, he can maintain this form indefinitely without tiring, and it allowed him to defeat Toppo and even fight on equal footing with Jiren, the strongest warrior in Universe 11.
3) Vegeta

I’ve always watched Vegeta trailing just behind Goku, but that doesn’t diminish how incredibly strong he is – easily one of the most powerful fighters across all twelve universes. What really struck me is how he achieved the Super Saiyan God transformation: pure, relentless training. Goku needed an ancient ceremony to get there, but Vegeta did it all on his own. He’s never stopped pushing himself, and the Dragon Ball Super manga shows he’s gotten even stronger. Still, even with all his progress, he hasn’t quite mastered Ultra Instinct yet.
2) Goku

Goku’s evolution over the years has been incredible, constantly surpassing expectations with his growing power. He’s always been an exceptional Saiyan, and that’s proven by being the first in centuries to achieve the legendary Super Saiyan transformation. The manga shows him continuing to refine this power, becoming even stronger while overcoming its limitations.
1) Gohan

From a very young age, Gohan has always had even more potential than his father. He achieved a level of power during the fight with Cell – becoming a Super Saiyan 2 – that no other Saiyan had reached at that point. However, after a few years of prioritizing his studies over training, he became less powerful. While he did regain some strength later, he continued to focus on his academic career after defeating Buu. Throughout most of Dragon Ball Super, his power wasn’t quite enough, but his new Beast form now makes him one of the most powerful Saiyans ever.
