DreamWorks Animation has consistently delivered excellent movies. They’re responsible for many of the most successful animated films of all time, including franchises like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda that continue to thrive. Currently, HBO Max has one of DreamWorks’ biggest hits available for streaming, but unfortunately, its even better follow-up isn’t on the platform yet.
The Shrek movies are DreamWorks’ most successful series, and the first spin-off, Puss in Boots, is now available on HBO Max. This film takes place before the events of Shrek 2 and follows Puss as he travels to the Land of Giants in search of the legendary Golden Goose. It tells the story of how Puss became the beloved character we know, and it predates his return in the 2022 film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which isn’t currently on HBO Max.
Puss in Boots Led to an Even Better Sequel
The movie Puss in Boots proved something remarkable: a character originally appearing in another series can become a star on its own. Released in 2011, the film was a big financial success, earning $555 million despite costing only $130 million to make. It was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and it’s clear to see why audiences loved it.
Puss in Boots is a really enjoyable and uplifting movie that successfully expanded the world of Shrek. Rather than just trying to make money, it gave a fascinating Shrek character an exciting backstory full of action and adventure, making it fun for viewers of all ages. The film was a well-made and entertaining adventure with great voice acting, and surprisingly, the sequel turned out to be even better.
As a huge animation fan, I was so excited for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish when it finally came out in 2022 – and it totally delivered! Critics loved it, giving it a 95% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and honestly, it’s one of the best sequels DreamWorks has ever made, and one of the strongest animated sequels I’ve seen in a long time. The story was just so gripping, with characters that felt really well-developed and a lot more at stake emotionally. Seeing Puss lose eight of his nine lives really forced him (and us!) to think about what truly matters. Plus, the animation style was gorgeous – it looked like a beautiful, hand-drawn storybook come to life, which was a huge step up from the first movie.
Where to Stream Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?
If you have HBO Max, you can watch the original Puss in Boots movie. But for the newer film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, you’ll need to head to Peacock. That streaming service also has The Adventures of Puss in Boots, the animated series that aired from 2015 to 2018, and all four Shrek movies.
