After nine years, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is almost here, with the first four episodes dropping on November 26th. That means we need to prepare ourselves for the possibility of losing some beloved characters. So far, the show has mostly killed off supporting characters like Bob Newby and Eddie Munson. But with the final episodes coming up, it’s likely that some of the main characters won’t survive, especially given the show’s large cast. Fans are bracing for some heartbreaking losses.
Will Byers and Eleven are the characters most likely to stop Vecna, which unfortunately makes them prime targets for danger in the final season of Stranger Things. After revisiting the entire series, I’m genuinely worried about their survival. Many fans online have even said they’ll stop watching if anything happens to either of them! A subtle scene from Season 3 hints that their stories are connected, suggesting both could be in serious jeopardy as the show concludes.
This Stranger Things Moment Makes Me Worried Dustin and Steve Will Die in Season 5

Fans of Stranger Things love both Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) and Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), but their funny and heartwarming friendship is a real highlight of the show. It’s an unlikely pairing – Steve begins as a popular kid, while Dustin and his friends feel like outsiders. However, that’s what makes their connection so special, as seen in their memorable alliance during Season 2, which shows that differences aren’t as important as they seem.
In Season 3, Steve and Dustin’s bond deepens, ultimately leading to them – along with Robin and Erica – being trapped in a Russian military base under the Starcourt Mall. Looking back at the storyline, I noticed a scene initially meant to be funny that actually foreshadows how connected their destinies become. In Season 3, Episode 4 of Stranger Things, Steve tells everyone to step back when opening a strange box in the underground base. Robin and Erica listen, but Dustin refuses, saying, “If you die, I die,” which creates a really awkward, funny moment.
Watching the trailer again, I’m honestly worried about Steve and Dustin. It’s so clear Dustin would do anything for Steve, even face danger with him, and I fear that loyalty might end up costing them both their lives against Vecna. That emotional hug between them in the trailer? It just looks so heartbreaking, and while it could be about anything, from a storytelling point of view, it makes sense that one or both of them might not make it through Season 5. It’s a tough thought, but it feels like a real possibility.
Dustin & Steve’s Deaths Would Make Perfect Sense for the Final Season

It would be narratively fitting if Dustin and Steve died in the final season of Stranger Things. Both characters have developed significantly, and their deaths would have a powerful impact on viewers. Dustin, while not as central as Eleven or Will, is the group’s strategist and his loss would be deeply felt, giving the remaining characters a strong motivation to fight on. Furthermore, his unresolved grief over Eddie Munson makes him particularly vulnerable to Vecna’s attacks.
As a fan, I think Steve dying could actually be a really powerful ending for his character. Remember how much of a jerk he was in the beginning? He’s more than made up for that, honestly, so it wouldn’t feel right just to kill him off. But a truly selfless sacrifice, especially if he was protecting the others – his ‘kids,’ really – would show just how far he’s come. It would complete his journey, and honestly, it feels fitting considering he’s always been the one looking out for everyone.
Killing either of these characters would definitely give the final season of Stranger Things a powerful emotional punch. Fans love them both, and it would be more surprising than if a main character like Eleven or Will were to die. If they were both killed off, it would be incredibly heartbreaking, but also feel earned, given their strong relationship over several seasons. Still, I’m hoping the writers choose a more hopeful path instead.
There’s a More Optimistic Way to Read This Overlooked Stranger Things Scene

Re-watching Stranger Things Season 3 brought back my anxiety about Dustin and Steve’s safety, but looking at it another way, it sets up an interesting arc for Dustin. His bond with Eddie in Season 4 felt similar to his friendship with Steve, giving him another older friend to look up to. Eddie’s sacrifice deeply affected Dustin, and he’s probably still dealing with that pain. If Steve were to face a similar danger and Dustin could save him, it would be a way for Dustin to make amends for not being able to save Eddie, helping him overcome his guilt and sadness.
The line “If you die, I die” from Season 3 suggests a strong connection between Dustin and Steve, and this could ultimately save them. Their loyalty to each other might be what allows both of them to survive the upcoming dangers, even though those dangers will likely be life-threatening – as is typical for the characters in Stranger Things. Hopefully, Steve and Dustin will manage to make it through.
