Disney’s Star Wars Has Now Cancelled 2 ‘Knights of Ren’ Spin-Off Projects (Confirmed)

Lucasfilm had significant plans for the Knights of Ren but ultimately scaled them back in two projects. Introduced in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the Knights of Ren were a group of masked warriors devoted to the dark side, led by Kylo Ren. They were skilled with various weapons and used the Force in a rough, untamed way. This ancient group served as Kylo Ren’s enforcers, operating behind the scenes throughout the trilogy and following the dark-side teachings of the Ren.

In The Rise of Skywalker, the Knights of Ren were shown working with Kylo Ren to control the First Order and track down Rey on Pasaana. However, after Kylo Ren was redeemed as Ben Solo, it became clear their real loyalty was to Darth Sidious. Ultimately, Ben Solo killed them, effectively ending the Knights of Ren.

Though the Knights of Ren appeared more in The Rise of Skywalker, many fans felt they weren’t used to their full potential throughout the sequel trilogy. While some additional stories about them have been released, Lucasfilm has reportedly decided against developing larger roles for them in future TV shows and films.

Star Wars’ 2 Knights of Ren Movies & Shows You Will Never See

The Hunt for Ben Solo

Actor Adam Driver previously collaborated with director Steven Soderbergh and writers Rebecca Blunt and Scott Z. Burns on a project called The Hunt for Ben Solo. However, this potential sequel to the Star Wars trilogy was cancelled, reportedly because Disney executives were unsure how the character Ben Solo could still be alive after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

Ever since the team behind the unfinished film The Hunt of Ben Solo shared their work, a petition to complete the movie – which focuses on the character Kylo Ren – has quickly gained a lot of support. Fans have been incredibly dedicated to the cause, even going so far as to rent billboards in Times Square and fly a banner over Disney Studios in California.

Not much is known about the story, but if the project had moved forward, it likely would have focused on Ben Solo’s journey towards redemption and potentially revealed more about his past with the Knights of Ren.

Recent comics by writer Charles Soule, specifically The Rise of Kylo Ren and Legacy of Vader, have revealed new details about the group and its leader, Kylo Ren. Some of this backstory could have been explored in The Hunt for Ben Solo.

Issue #8 of Legacy of Vader introduced Tava Ren as the new leader of the Knights of Ren. She began her own pursuit of Ben Solo, intending to kill him around the time of The Force Awakens, and this storyline revealed more about the Knights of Ren as a group.

The Acolyte Season 2

It was once uncertain when the Knights of Ren first appeared in the Star Wars story, but the series The Acolyte promised to reveal their origins. The show featured Manny Jacinto, known from The Good Place, as Qimir, also known as The Stranger—a mysterious dark side user hinted to be linked to Kylo Ren.

The Disney+ series set in the High Republic era (about 170 years before The Force Awakens) was cancelled last year because it was too expensive to produce. This means the second season won’t happen, and the show’s storyline about Qimir will remain unresolved.

According to showrunner Leslye Headland, as detailed in The Acolyte artbook (via Jedi News), the character The Stranger was originally intended to be a Knight of Ren. This would have allowed the Sith’s traditional Rule of Two to continue, even with both Qimir and Palpatine being trained by Darth Plagueis.

The character was designed with a specific backstory in mind, knowing we’d later introduce Darth Plagueis, who would become Palpatine’s teacher. We also established the Rule of Two – the Sith tradition of only having two members, a master and an apprentice – and to make that lineage continue, we decided the Stranger should be the first Knight of Ren, a member of a group similar to the Sith that ultimately survives.

Although Qimir offered a great opportunity to delve into the history of the Knights of Ren, it looks like that won’t be happening on Disney+. The story introduced in The Acolyte is expanding through other sources, so details about Qimir’s connection to the Knights of Ren might appear in a future book or comic instead.
