Marvel Studios is searching for a third director for the upcoming Blade reboot, and they’re hoping to find someone who can finally bring the project to life with Mahershala Ali as the vampire hunter. The production of Blade has been unusually difficult since Ali was cast as Eric Brooks six years ago. Two directors have already left the project: Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) departed in September 2022, and Yann Demange (White Boy Rick) left in March 2024, just before filming was set to begin.
When the original director left, production on Blade stopped, and the project has stalled ever since. Several writers have tried different versions of the script, but none have worked out. Now, with Eric Pearson – a frequent Marvel Studios collaborator – writing the script, things are looking up. Mahershala Ali and Mia Goth are still set to star, but Marvel is still searching for a new director, and there are seven talented filmmakers who would be a good fit.
7) Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead

Before joining Marvel Studios in 2022, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead weren’t widely known, but they’ve quickly demonstrated their ability to handle even the MCU’s most beloved characters with skill and respect. They’ve directed episodes of several popular Marvel shows, including Moon Knight, Loki (where they were also executive producers), and Daredevil: Born Again (also as executive producers). Their earlier work, which explored psychological science fiction and horror, was also impressive. With a confident style that blends striking visuals and dark storytelling, Benson and Moorhead seem perfectly suited to direct an exciting and fitting Blade adventure within the MCU.
6) Chad Stahelski

I really hope Chad Stahelski directs the new Blade movie – he’d be amazing! He clearly knows action, having worked as Keanu Reeves’ stunt double on The Matrix and then directing him in the first John Wick. Think about it – he’s directed all four John Wick films! He’s a master at those incredible, large-scale action sequences, and that’s exactly what Blade needs. The character is such a powerful, fast-paced antihero, and Stahelski has already proven he can expertly bring that kind of energy to the screen. It would be fantastic to see his vision for the Daywalker.
5) Lexi Alexander

Lexi Alexander is a strong contender to direct the upcoming Blade movie, though she’s often overlooked in discussions. Like Chad Stahelski, she started as a stunt performer, giving her a deep understanding of action filmmaking – a huge asset for Blade. She’s already received critical recognition, including an Academy Award nomination for her short film Johnny Flynton, and Marvel fans may know her as the director of Punisher: War Zone, starring the late Ray Stevenson. While War Zone isn’t universally loved, its direction, visuals, and commitment to the comic book source material were widely praised. Alexander could bring that same energy and fidelity to the Blade reboot within the MCU.
4) Ryan Coogler

Despite denials from both Ryan Coogler and Marvel’s Kevin Feige, we were hoping he’d be involved with the Blade reboot. Coogler is a highly respected director, having won ten NAACP Image Awards, four Black Reel Awards, and received two Academy Award nominations, among other accolades. He’s known for powerful films like Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Judas and the Black Messiah, and he successfully led the Black Panther franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, demonstrating his ability to tell compelling stories with diverse representation. His recent film, Sinners, proved he can also deliver genuinely frightening vampire stories. It’s disappointing he won’t be directing Blade, as his vision for the character would have been exciting.
3) Dee Rees

Dee Rees might seem like an unusual pick for the Blade reboot, but she’d actually be a fantastic choice. While she’s best known for directing Mudbound – earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay as the first African-American woman to do so – Rees has also produced impressive work like Bessie, Pariah, The Last Thing He Wanted, and Masters of the Air. Her strong focus on visual style would be a real asset to Blade, helping it stand out within the MCU. Rees often explores complex identities in her films, and this could resonate powerfully with Blade, given that the character Eric Brooks navigates a dual existence as both human and vampire. Ultimately, Dee Rees could bring a truly inspired vision to the project.
2) Michael Giacchino

Michael Giacchino has been creating music for Marvel Studios since 2016, starting with Doctor Strange and including scores for the recent Spider-Man films and Thor: Love and Thunder. While he’s worked on many other projects, Giacchino recently made his directorial debut within the MCU with the 2022 special, Werewolf by Night, which impressed viewers with its distinctive style and atmosphere. Although a follow-up to Werewolf by Night is being discussed, Giacchino could also direct other monster-themed Marvel stories, such as Blade, bringing his creative vision and musical talent to the project.
1) Jordan Peele

Jordan Peele first gained recognition as a comedian, but he truly surprised audiences with his 2017 directorial debut, Get Out. The film earned him three Academy Award nominations, including a win for Best Original Screenplay, and established him as a highly skilled director of suspenseful, often frightening, stories that also incorporate humor – a style that would be ideal for a Blade reboot. Since then, Peele has directed Us and Nope, and contributed to films like BlacKkKlansman, Candyman, Monkey Man, and Him, consistently focusing on Black narratives with unsettling themes. Choosing Peele to direct the MCU’s Blade would be a fantastic decision. He’s capable of capturing the character’s blend of horror, action, drama, and comedy, bringing Eric Brooks – the Daywalker – to life perfectly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
