The future of Superman on the big screen is becoming clearer. James Gunn, who leads DC Studios, has creative control over the character and is focusing on a more human portrayal. This Superman will be more open and vulnerable, even explaining his actions to his enemies. This is a welcome change from previous versions that often felt distant and relied on brooding silence. While Zack Snyder’s darker take on the character did get made, this new direction offers a fresh approach.
Several attempts to create new Superman movies have fallen through, including one project called Superman: Flyby that at one point involved J.J. Abrams as a producer and director Brett Ratner (known for X-Men: The Last Stand). Many actors auditioned for the main role, but Brendan Fraser, famous for The Mummy, was a strong contender and even tried on the Superman suit during the casting process.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (reported by ComicBookMovie), Brendan Fraser shared memories of his initial experience working on a superhero film.
I really enjoyed reading that screenplay. They had me come to a studio, put me in an empty office, and made me sign a non-disclosure agreement. It was printed on red paper with black text, specifically so it couldn’t be easily copied. The story itself was amazing – basically Shakespeare set in space. It was a fantastic script. I was considered for a role, and I even did a screen test, wearing the costume for the main character.
The script initially interested Fraser, but he soon decided a different career path was better for him. He understood the intense pressure that comes with playing a prominent comic book role.
He admitted he wasn’t sure he was prepared for that challenge at the time. He’d felt ready, drawn in by the big opportunity and the excitement, but looking back, he wasn’t. As Terry George once said, ‘If it’s not meant to be, it will pass you by,’ and he realized that was true for him.
Almost twenty years later, Fraser landed a part in a type of movie he’d been wanting to do. Sadly, it didn’t do much better than his previous film, Flyby, and those in charge made sure it was never released.
Brendan Fraser Nearly Appeared in Another DC Project

Following his return as Batman in The Flash, Michael Keaton was cast in Batgirl, a film centered on one of Batman’s allies. New actress Leslie Grace was chosen to play the lead, and filmmakers wanted an experienced actor to challenge her. Brendan Fraser signed on to play the villain Firefly, a character with a sad past, and completed all of his scenes.
Warner Bros. Discovery canceled the film in 2022, even though it was almost finished and filming had largely wrapped up. The decision sparked a lot of debate, and many people involved with the movie – including actor Brendan Fraser, who was particularly pleased with his work – publicly supported it.
