It became clear that Gallino, the cartel leader from season one, created Sonrisa, even though the show didn’t mention him by name. Following the second episode of Landman season 2, it’s becoming obvious that Monty’s deal involving the offshore natural gas rig will cause significant trouble. While the details are complex, filled with legal and financial jargon and oil industry specifics, the show provided enough information for viewers to understand the basic situation.

Monty owned an offshore gas rig that was wrecked by a hurricane. His insurance company gave him $420 million to rebuild it, but the money was legally supposed to be released as the reconstruction happened. Monty convinced the insurance company to give him the full amount upfront. Instead of rebuilding the rig, however, he used the $420 million to purchase new oil fields, as seen in Landman season 1.

Cami, Tommy, and M-Tex are unexpectedly responsible for rebuilding an offshore oil rig, even though they weren’t aware of it, and they’re facing a $420 million cost.
