The new movie Wicked: For Good was a huge hit at the box office this weekend, breaking several records. It was already highly anticipated for 2025, and many predicted it would earn more than the first Wicked movie, which opened with $112 million in November 2024. Wicked: For Good’s opening weekend was bigger than the original Wicked and even exceeded the domestic opening of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water at $134 million. This sets up an interesting challenge for December’s release of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
According to Deadline, Wicked: For Good earned $150 million in its opening weekend in the US, making it the second-highest opening of 2025 after The Minecraft Movie ($162 million). Globally, the film grossed $226 million, breaking the record for movie adaptations of Broadway shows. This opening positions Wicked: For Good as the fourth-biggest global opening of the year, following Lilo & Stitch ($340 million), Jurassic World: Rebirth ($322 million), and The Minecraft Movie ($313 million).

Universal Pictures
The opening weekend for Wicked: For Good was a major success. It’s Universal Pictures’ second-biggest domestic opening ever, just behind Jurassic World. It also had the second-largest pre-Thanksgiving opening weekend, trailing only The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Overall, it ranks as the third-highest-grossing November opening weekend, following The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The film Wicked: For Good had a huge opening weekend, even bigger than Avatar: The Way of Water. Now, all attention is on whether the next Avatar movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, can achieve similar success when it comes out next month. While Avatar: The Way of Water still earned more money worldwide during its opening weekend ($435 million in December 2022), the new Avatar sequel is still predicted to be the year’s highest-grossing film.
The movie Wicked: For Good had a strong opening weekend, but it remains to be seen if it will perform as well over time as the original Wicked film. While Wicked: For Good currently has a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to the original’s 88%), both movies received an “A” grade from audiences according to CinemaScore. Wicked: For Good is expected to dominate the box office for the next three weeks, along with the upcoming Zootopia 2, until Avatar: Fire and Ash is released on December 19, 2025. All three films are projected to be among the top 10 highest-grossing movies domestically and potentially worldwide.
