If you haven’t heard, the show Poker Face won’t be back for a third season on Peacock. While the second season aired earlier this year, it will be the last on that streaming service. However, creator Rian Johnson is working on a new version of the show with Peter Dinklage as the lead, taking over from Natasha Lyonne. Despite all the talk, what’s the real story behind these plans?
At the premiere of the new movie Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Daniel J. Johnson discussed the ongoing speculation with Deadline. He confirmed he is working to continue the Poker Face concept and that he is a key part of the plans he’s presenting to potential partners. Johnson then explained:
It’s still very early in the process, and we’re exploring whether we can move forward with the project. I have a lot of respect for Peter and have always hoped to collaborate with him. I’m really enthusiastic about the possibility of getting this new version off the ground. It’s a bit of a risk, but I think working on the show could be incredibly enjoyable.
The significant change he’s referring to aligns with previous reports that creator Ryan Johnson plans for Poker Face to feature new detectives every few seasons. This means Charlie Cale’s role will eventually be taken over by a different actor as the show continues. Natasha Lyonne, who also executive produced, confirmed they and Johnson discussed this plan while finishing Season 2. So, Peter Dinklage isn’t a last-minute replacement, but was always potentially part of the show’s future direction.

The situation is complex. While Season 2 of the show did well on Peacock, it didn’t reach the same level of popularity as its first season. Because the show is costly to produce – with new locations, sets, and guest stars each week – and given Lyonne’s departure, the cancellation is understandable from a financial perspective. However, Johnson doesn’t see Poker Face as over. He believes the core concept is strong enough to continue, even if it means moving to a different streaming service, changing its format, or featuring a new lead actor.
Peter Dinklage is a perfect choice for this role. He’s both hilarious and capable of delivering serious, dramatic performances, as we’ve seen in shows like Dexter: Resurrection. Casting him as a detective with a troubled history is a brilliant move that could really revitalize the series.

If creator Ryan Johnson can sell the idea for a continuation of Poker Face to a streaming service like HBO, Netflix, or Amazon, viewers can anticipate a new version that feels different from the first two seasons. However, it will still maintain the core appeal of the original: a fresh mystery in each episode. While nothing is confirmed yet, Johnson’s recent public comments suggest the project is still actively being developed.
It remains to be seen if the recent surprising turn of events will lead to another season of Poker Face. While we wait, Rian Johnson is working on the next Knives Out mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, which is scheduled for release in theaters on November 26, 2025. It will then be available on Netflix starting December 12.
