A fantastic, but often overlooked, Godzilla movie is heading to a new streaming service, and it really deserves a follow-up. With the Godzilla franchise recently celebrating its 70th anniversary, it’s enjoying a period of great success. Toho, the company behind Godzilla, is investing heavily—over a billion dollars—to expand the franchise with new projects, and a sequel to the critically acclaimed Shin Godzilla should be a priority.
Released in Japan in 2016, Shin Godzilla offered a fresh and innovative take on the classic monster. While a sequel hasn’t happened yet, many fans have hoped for one. Now, even more people will be able to enjoy it, as Shin Godzilla will be available to stream on HBO Max starting December 1st. This release is thanks to a partnership between GKIDS and HBO Max, and fans are excited to finally see it come to fruition.
Shin Godzilla Comes to HBO Max
This December 1st, GKIDS and HBO Max are launching their new streaming partnership with the arrival of Shin Godzilla. The deal, announced earlier this summer, will make HBO Max the exclusive streaming home for GKIDS’ films. While it’s unknown if the version available will be the 4K remastered release from earlier this year, it’s still a great reason to check it out, particularly if you haven’t seen it before.
Directed by Hideaki Anno, known for Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Shinji Higuchi, of Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Shin Godzilla presented a significantly grimmer version of the iconic monster. The film largely centered on Japan’s political and societal response to this disaster, highlighting the challenges of bureaucracy. It also offered a uniquely compelling take on Godzilla, one that many fans consider among the best, and fear may not be revisited in future installments.
Will Shin Godzilla Ever Get a Sequel?
A new Shin Godzilla movie is a real possibility in the future. The huge success of Godzilla Minus One – which is already getting a sequel – has led Toho to consider expanding the Godzilla franchise. This includes projects like Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and also exploring new continuations, potentially including another film in the Shin Godzilla series.
A report surfaced earlier this year suggesting Toho was considering a follow-up to Shin Godzilla, though it’s unclear how much progress they’ve made. Fans generally loved that version of the monster and wanted to see more, but it wasn’t as popular as Godzilla Minus One would later become.
