Starting early next year, the method of obtaining discounted Nintendo Switch games through Game Vouchers will no longer be available for purchase. Nintendo has announced this change, meaning that as of January 30th, 2026, Nintendo Switch Online users will no longer be able to buy these vouchers. However, any vouchers acquired before this date can still be redeemed for up to a year afterward. This gives Nintendo Switch Online subscribers ample time to utilize their vouchers, and it appears that more games will continue to be added to the program until January.
Recently, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have had the opportunity to save money on select Nintendo games through the use of Game Vouchers. These vouchers are sold in pairs for approximately $100 and can be redeemed for full-priced games from a designated list. Since some of these games typically cost around $60, using a voucher could potentially save you about $20. However, it’s not beneficial to use a voucher on popular titles like Super Mario Odyssey, as the game frequently goes on sale throughout the year, often dropping to $40.
The cancellation news for the Nintendo program might dishearten some enthusiasts, as it’s been hinted at since early this year. In February, Nintendo made it clear that Game Vouchers can’t be applied to Switch 2 games, such as “Mario Kart World” and “Donkey Kong Bananza”. The rationale behind this decision wasn’t fully disclosed then, but considering the higher cost of these newer games, it now seems more logical. It’s speculative, but there might be a possibility that a new version of the program tailored for Switch 2 could emerge at a higher price point; we’ll have to wait for an official announcement to confirm this.
Some notable games, such as “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” and “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond”, are yet to arrive on the original Nintendo Switch this year. While “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” is already compatible with the Game Voucher program, it’s plausible that “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” might follow suit, though Nintendo may choose to wait until a release date is announced. As for games scheduled in 2025, these appear to be the final first-party Switch games. However, Nintendo has already revealed two more first-party games slated for 2026: “Rhythm Heaven Groove” and “Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream”. There’s a chance that these games could also become part of the program.
Over the past month, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news from Nintendo, dripping in slowly. Since the release of the Switch 2, they’ve made a few announcements, but nothing on the scale of a Nintendo Direct yet. As a fan, I can’t help but hope that we’ll get one soon, so we can gain a clearer understanding of their plans for the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 in the coming months.
