As a big fan of the IT universe, I’ve been really digging the HBO series, and it’s way more connected to the movies than just taking place before them. It’s not just the setting – we’re seeing characters pop up who ended up in smaller roles in the 2017 film and its sequel. For example, Leeroy Hanlon is Mike’s grandfather in the movies, and he’s already appeared! But it’s also introducing new people who are clearly connected to established characters. Like, Teddy Uris is one of the first to fall victim in the series, and it’s hinted he’s related to Stan Uris from the Losers’ Club. And get this – Police Chief Clint Bowers is actually Henry Bowers’ grandfather! It’s cool to see those family lines being established.
The newest episode of IT: Welcome to Derry revealed some big surprises. Not only did Pennywise reappear after being mostly unseen, but the show also confirmed the identity of Ingrid, a character played by Madeleine Stowe. Ingrid, who befriended Lilly at Juniper Hill Asylum, is actually Mrs. Kersh, a significant character from the IT movies – and this discovery hints at a major plot twist to come.
IT: Welcome to Derry Brings Back Mrs. Kersh With a Twist

In the fifth episode of IT: Welcome to Derry, a seemingly minor scene reveals the true identity of Madeleine Stowe’s character. When Lily visits Ingrid at her house, Ingrid’s husband unexpectedly appears, and Lily calls him Mr. Kersh – the same name we heard associated with the town butcher earlier in the season. This brief moment confirms that Ingrid is the younger version of the unsettling Mrs. Kersh from IT: Chapter Two – or so it seems.
Later in the episode, it’s revealed that Ingrid Kersh was the woman Hank (Stephen Rider) was having an affair with. This affair served as his supposed alibi for the night Pennywise killed the children at the movie theater – information he hasn’t yet told the police. After Hank escapes custody, he and Ingrid meet and confirm their relationship with a kiss. They then discuss how to get Hank out of town, given the heavy police presence, and Ingrid suggests reaching out to Charlotte Hanlon, who works on the military base, for assistance.
The show IT: Welcome to Derry is taking an intriguing approach with the character of Mrs. Kersh. While she’s clearly one of the forms IT takes to terrorize Derry in IT: Chapter Two, the current timeline, set 54 years earlier, shows her as a seemingly normal person with no connection to Pennywise. This makes the next few episodes particularly compelling, as we’ll see how her story unfolds and how she ultimately becomes connected to IT’s history.
In IT: Chapter Two, it was revealed that Mrs. Kersh was actually a manifestation of IT, and she confirmed a long-held fan theory: her father was Bob Gray, the first human to portray Pennywise the Clown. Fans have long debated whether Bob Gray and Mrs. Kersh were real people or creations of IT used to terrorize its victims. With the new series, IT: Welcome to Derry, appearing to confirm this theory, the challenge now is how to integrate this backstory while still resolving the show’s other plotlines.
