A Cartoon Network Movie Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary as Fans Await Its Revival

Cartoon Network has launched many popular and imaginative shows in recent years. Adventure Time captivated audiences with its world of Oooo, and later introduced the characters Fionna and Cake. Recently, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball returned with a new series available on Hulu. Now, another beloved franchise, Regular Show, is getting a revival to celebrate a significant anniversary.

In 2015, Cartoon Network released Regular Show: The Movie, sending Mordecai and Rigby on one of their most unusual and expansive adventures yet. Originally conceived as a longer TV episode, the creator, J.G. Quintel, decided to make it a full-length movie instead. Like many Regular Show episodes, the story started small but quickly grew, and the movie delved into Mordecai and Rigby’s childhoods to tell its science fiction-based story. While the series had previously offered glimpses into their pasts, the movie used time travel to fully develop their backstories.

Even now, Regular Show is considered a classic Cartoon Network series, and it’s easy to see why. The show, about a group of park employees, resonated with older viewers because it dealt with relatable, everyday problems. While you can stream the Regular Show series on Hulu, the movie isn’t currently available on the platform. If you want to watch Regular Show: The Movie, you’ll have to rent or buy it digitally. Though it’s not essential to the main storyline, it’s still a fun watch for dedicated fans.

The Future of Mordecai And Rigby

There’s no question Regular Show was a long-running hit on Cartoon Network, lasting eight seasons and nearly 250 episodes. Now, the show is planning a return with Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, a spin-off that’s been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced in 2024. So far, no trailers or story details have been revealed. Given the original series had a clear ending, this spin-off could offer new stories about the park employees and adventures we didn’t see before.

The last scene of Regular Show showed a VHS tape labeled “Regular Show: The Lost Tapes” appearing, suggesting potential future episodes. While Regular Show has a promising outlook, another of creator J.G. Quintel’s shows, Close Enough, was unexpectedly removed from HBO Max, making it difficult to access. Fortunately, Quintel is working on a new series, Super Mutant Magic Academy. This show is different from his previous work – it’s based on a comic book, marking a new direction for Quintel and his team.

There’s been talk of a new installment called The Lost Tapes coming next year, but so far, no official announcement has been made. Fortunately, it would be simple to weave in stories that viewers didn’t see originally, because Regular Show didn’t have a strict timeline. The show’s continuity was flexible, and while major events were sometimes referenced, adding new adventures between existing episodes would be a funny and seamless fit with the original eight seasons.

It’s been ten years since the Regular Show movie came out! Share your thoughts in the comments and discuss it with other fans in the ComicBook Forum.
