It’s been nine years since the release of Zootopia, a hugely successful film that earned over $1 billion worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The long-awaited sequel, Zootopia 2, follows the adventures of Officer Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and her partner, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), as they continue their work as detectives. After successfully saving Zootopia, they’ve been promoted to a specialized unit, but now they have to train a new team of rookie officers, which they’re not entirely thrilled about.
The city remains divided by climate-controlling walls, creating distinct districts like Tundra Town, which is governed by the wealthy Lynxley family. However, snakes and reptiles have been exiled from the city and are resentful of their exclusion.
Before Chief Bogo’s morning briefing even starts, Judy and Nick are already working undercover to fight crime at the city docks, but their operation goes wrong and they’re assigned to desk duty. Undeterred, Judy discovers a clue and convinces Nick to continue investigating, focusing on a valuable journal that a sneaky serpent named Gary De’Snake plans to steal during a glamorous city ball.
Similar to the original Zootopia, the sequel features a solid storyline with unexpected twists. This reinforces the film’s central message about how we perceive others, a theme that’s emphasized in the concluding scene to ensure the audience understands it.
Despite a few small issues, this sequel is thoroughly enjoyable, especially with its impressive world-building and stunning animation, all thanks to Jared Bush’s writing and co-direction. Like the first film, it’s packed with clever jokes and visual gags that adults will appreciate – referencing movies like ‘Ratatouille’, ‘Babe’, ‘The Shining’, and ‘Silence of the Lambs’. There are so many funny moments that you’ll likely discover something new on a second watch.
……and do wait for the very end of the credits with a scene that hints at Zootropolis 3!
