Prior to Superman hitting the big screen this week, DC enthusiasts can enjoy a sneak peek at how director James Gunn transforms Superman. Superman marks the initial theatrical launch in James Gunn’s newly established DC Universe, serving as the kickoff for an array of upcoming projects. However, let’s not jump ahead; a preview from Superman: The Art and Making of the Film invites Gunn, alongside David Corenswet (portraying Clark Kent/Superman) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), to share their perspectives on the contrast between the everyday Clark Kent and his extraordinary persona, Superman.
The Art and Making of the Film”. It is disclosed that when viewers are introduced to Superman, he will have been in his career for a few years, with Clark Kent already established as a successful journalist, having just landed his first front-page article at the Daily Planet of Metropolis. As director James Gunn recalls, “Clark is still a work in progress for Superman. He wants to keep his identity hidden, but he’s also an integral part of Superman, who does have his flaws (many of which Lois brings up during their heated argument).” Gunn further explains that while it is often said that Superman is the real man and Clark is the mask, both characters are essential to understanding Superman. As a result, the Kents belong to an exclusive group.
Afterwards, David Corenswet shares his thoughts on what sets Superman apart from other heroes. He expresses that Superman prefers for his superhero identity to represent a symbol rather than getting involved in personal matters, as he wants to safeguard the people he cares about. This is because Superman isn’t omnipresent enough to protect all of his loved ones simultaneously. In this portrayal, Corenswet explains that Superman’s dual identity stems from his affection for humanity and the fact that it’s not a character he acts out, but rather the self-image he held before discovering he was an alien and adopted.
Rachel Brosnahan, who portrays Lois Lane, was struck by David Corenswet’s ability to embody both Clark Kent and Superman. “As I was leaving during testing, I passed a fitting room where David was trying on the suit,” she recalled. “I didn’t know if we had the roles yet, but when I saw him in that costume, I thought, ‘He truly embodies Superman, and he truly embodies Clark Kent.'” She added, “There’s a sincerity to both characters that feels quite distinct, and it’s been fascinating to observe him develop these two personas and the connection between them.
George Reeves, the live-action Clark Kent of the 1950s who donned a slightly boxy, lighter suit compared to other portrayals, served as an inspiration for David Corenswet’s depiction of Clark Kent. As soon as [David] put on the double-breasted suit and started fiddling with it, along with a troublesome bag that kept slipping off his shoulder, we contacted James, and he remarked, “I think this is the first time, I believe, that this character is distinct from Superman because he looks so incredibly different.” This observation was made by costume designer Judianna Makovsky.
