Mortal Kombat Fans Finally Can Play Online in Legacy Kollection (But Not for Long)

Good news for fans of the classic Mortal Kombat arcade games! Warner Bros. Games is adding online play to the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection just in time for the holidays. It’s available now as a limited-time beta test on Steam. This is a welcome surprise for longtime players who want to challenge their friends and family this Thanksgiving.

The team behind the game is launching a beta to let players test out online matches and help them collect data to improve performance. They want people to be able to play Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection with loved ones during the Thanksgiving holiday. The developers will be collecting feedback through their official Discord server, and they want everyone to know this is an early preview – not the finished online experience. They didn’t say how long the beta will last or when it will be available on consoles, but they confirmed that it will eventually come to other platforms.

Online Arcade aims to recapture the fun of classic arcades and basement game nights. Up to 16 players can connect in a room and play any of the online-compatible games from the Legacy Kollection. The system supports up to eight simultaneous matches, letting players either compete or watch. A key feature is Spectator Mode, perfect for streamers and casual tournaments – fans can watch, commentate, create brackets, and even broadcast the gameplay. This collection truly brings the energy of those old arcade gatherings to life with modern technology.

When playing online, you can create rooms that are either public—visible to everyone in a list showing connection quality—or private, accessible only with an invitation. Before joining a room, you can see how many people are playing and watching. Anyone in the room can start a match with any of the available Mortal Kombat games. Matches are played in a continuous round-robin format, where the winner stays on to fight the next challenger, just like in traditional arcades. People watching can join a queue to challenge the current winner or simply enjoy the game.

To try out the Online Arcade Beta, you need to sign up through Steam. Here’s how to join the beta on Steam:

  1. Log in to Steam with the account that owns the Kollection.
  2. Right-click Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Properties.
  3. Select Betas.
  4. Enter the code: PublicOnlineArcadeBeta.
  5. Opt into online_arcade_public_beta.
  6. The game will automatically update.
  7. To leave, return to the Betas tab and select None.

As a gamer, I always get excited when a developer releases a beta or demo! It’s a great way for us to get a sneak peek and let them know what we think. They use our feedback to tweak things and make the game even better, which is awesome. Sometimes they do it before the game even comes out to build hype, and other times they’ll test new features after launch based on what players are asking for. Honestly, these kinds of events are happening more and more these days, and it’s a really cool way for developers and fans to connect.
