The TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer started with Buffy Summers discovering her destiny as the Chosen One, guided by her mentor Giles. She quickly made friends with the group known as the Scooby Gang and learned about Angel, a unique vampire with a soul. This setup launched seven exciting seasons of battling monsters. While the first season introduced many of the core characters who stayed with the show throughout its run, several other fantastic characters joined later on. These newcomers became almost as important as the originals and are still fan favorites today.
Beyond the original cast, Buffy the Vampire Slayer gained some fantastic characters after its first season. Here’s a look at four of the best—from a well-loved vampire to a Slayer even more powerful than Buffy herself.
4) Faith

Buffy was destined to fight vampires and other undead creatures to protect the world, but when a Slayer dies, a new one always takes their place. This happened several times throughout the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. When Buffy initially died, another Slayer named Kendra was activated and appeared in Season 2, leading to conflict after Buffy was brought back to life – creating a situation with two Slayers at once. After Drusilla killed Kendra, a replacement Slayer, Faith, was activated, even though Buffy was still fighting, resulting in yet another dual-Slayer scenario.
Though Faith appeared as the third Slayer in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she’s become a fan favorite because of her tough, rebellious personality. Her difficult relationship with Buffy made her a compelling character, even when she briefly became a villain working with The Mayor. Later, she moved over to Angel, initially hired to kill him, but eventually turned her life around and found redemption.
3) Anya

Anya quickly became a beloved character due to her witty writing and Emma Caulfield’s excellent portrayal. First appearing in the Season 3 episode “The Wish,” Anya was originally a vengeance demon. This episode saw her unexpectedly transformed into a human, forcing her to relearn life after centuries as a demon.
Anya’s story really took off when she fell in love with Xander, and their relationship became a fan favorite on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her struggles to understand humanity were often funny, especially when she confessed her completely illogical fear of bunnies in a memorable Halloween episode. Anya was so popular with viewers that many were upset when Joss Whedon unexpectedly killed her off in the show’s final episode.
2) Tara

Tara, played by Amber Benson, was a beloved character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and she was involved in one of the show’s most emotionally impactful scenes. She first appeared in the highly-regarded Season 4 episode, “Hush,” which featured the terrifying Gentlemen who stole everyone’s voices. It was wonderful to watch Tara and Willow connect at a Wicca meeting during that episode, despite being unable to speak.
Tara was originally only meant to appear in a few episodes, but she quickly became popular with viewers and became a regular character. Her relationship with Willow was considered one of the show’s best. Sadly, Tara’s life was cut short when she was killed by The Trio, a moment that deeply affected Willow and led her down a dark path of revenge. Unusually for a main character on Buffy, Tara was never brought back to life.
1) Spike

Spike quickly became the most important new character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer after the first season. He first appeared in the third episode of Season 2, titled “School Hard.” Originally intended as a minor character, Spike proved incredibly popular with viewers, and the network asked that he be brought back regularly. This led creator Joss Whedon to develop him from a villain into a member of the Scooby Gang.
Spike was a major character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and continued to play a significant role when he crossed over to Angel, even though his character died in the Buffy finale. He was central to many of the show’s biggest events and became arguably the most beloved character after Buffy and Willow. Among characters introduced after the first season, Spike stands out as the most popular and impactful.
