Marvel has recently started publishing manga, bringing popular characters to the Japanese comic format. One notable example is Deadpool: Samurai, which features the irreverent Wade Wilson. Spider-Man is also getting the manga treatment, and while one unusual series, Spider-Man: Octo-Girl – which reimagines Doctor Octopus as a young girl – concluded earlier this year, it’s scheduled for a final installment next month.
The final installment of the Spider-Man: Octo-Girl digital series came out on January 7th, 2025, and the complete story will be available in a fourth and final manga volume on December 4th. This manga offers a fresh take on the Superior Spider-Man comic book arc, where Doctor Octopus took control of Spider-Man’s body. However, the manga’s version of events takes a very different turn for the villain. Here’s a description from Viz Media: “After a fight with Spider-Man, the brilliant but evil Doctor Octopus falls into a coma. When he wakes up, he finds himself inside the body of Otoha Okutamiya, an ordinary student in Tokyo! This marks the start of a bizarre new life for Spider-Man’s greatest enemy…as a high school girl!”
Marvel’s Manga History
While Spider-Man: Octo-Girl is a recent manga adaptation, it’s not the first. Spider-Man: Fake Red also presents a unique story, featuring a powerless teenager battling Venom while Peter Parker struggles with the symbiote. Even earlier, in 1970, creators Kosei Ono, Kazumasa Hirai, and Ryoichi Ikegami released Spider-Man: The Manga, offering a very different interpretation of the character. Spider-Man’s presence in anime is also noteworthy.
It’s surprising that Spider-Man hasn’t gotten his own anime series, especially since other popular Marvel characters like Iron Man, Wolverine, Blade, and the X-Men have. While Spider-Man appeared in the anime Marvel Disk Wars: Avengers alongside other heroes and villains, he wasn’t the main focus. Many fans are hoping that either Spider-Man: Fake Red or Spider-Man: Octo-Girl will be adapted into an anime series in the future.
The recent comic, Spider-Man: Octo Girl, was created by a team known for their superhero work. Writer Hideyuki Furuhashi and artist Betten Court, who previously worked on My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, brought their passion for superheroes to this new project.
