Although it doesn’t immediately stand out as particularly emotional, the first Thanksgiving episode of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is surprisingly poignant when you look back on it. The Big Bang Theory, being a show primarily about friends hanging out, didn’t have many Thanksgiving episodes – the holiday is usually spent with family, not just friends.
Thanksgiving episodes of The Big Bang Theory often had the main characters separated, which sometimes made those episodes feel disconnected. However, season 7’s episode 9, “The Thanksgiving Decoupling,” successfully tackled this challenge by weaving together the stories of multiple Thanksgiving dinners, making it a standout episode for the show.
In the Thanksgiving episode, Mrs. Wolowitz hosts dinner for Leonard, Penny, Amy, Sheldon, Bernadette, Raj, and Bernadette’s dad. Things get complicated when Penny discovers her old, joking marriage to Zack is actually legal. However, the most surprising moment comes when Sheldon unexpectedly connects with Howard’s father-in-law while watching a football game.

It’s genuinely funny to watch Sheldon talk about football! He doesn’t strike you as someone who’d be into sports, but he really knows his stuff and was actually impressing Bernadette’s dad with his knowledge of strategy. It makes sense when you remember his dad, George Sr., was a football coach – Sheldon absorbed a ton of information about the game growing up, even if he didn’t always seem interested!
Surprisingly, Sheldon’s knowledge of football is actually quite good – it turns out his dad worked in the field! This gives him an unexpected edge over Howard, who’s trying to win over his father-in-law, and leads to some of the funniest moments in the episode.
Although “The Thanksgiving Decoupling” is arguably The Big Bang Theory‘s funniest Thanksgiving episode, it’s not particularly heartwarming. That is, until the episode “Thanksgiving” from season one of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage aired years later. “The Thanksgiving Decoupling” is purely a comedy and doesn’t have the emotional depth found in some of the show’s more dramatic moments.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 5 Revealed Sheldon Missed The First Thanksgiving After George Sr.’s Death
CBS
The first Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Thanksgiving episode, called “Thanksgiving,” added a surprisingly emotional layer to the story. It showed that Sheldon didn’t return home for Thanksgiving the year his father passed away, and instead spent the holiday alone at Caltech, missing out on being with his family.
Sheldon wasn’t home for the holidays, and things were difficult for the rest of the family too. Mary started an argument at Mandy’s Thanksgiving dinner and left, with Georgie following her. In the end, Georgie and Mary ended up having Thanksgiving dinner at George Sr.’s grave, with Missy joining them.
Seeing the family without Sheldon was especially heartbreaking. While it’s difficult to picture the upcoming Christmas episode of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage without him, his absence in the “Thanksgiving” episode actually affected the Cooper family even more deeply than when he missed Christmas the previous year.
It’d be really tough if Sheldon had to spend another Christmas without his dad, but considering the show’s timeline, he’s probably 14 or 15 now. It’s just heartbreaking to think about how young he was – only 13 – when his dad passed away and he had to face Thanksgiving all alone. It really puts things into perspective how difficult that time must have been for him.

It was particularly heartbreaking that Sheldon couldn’t be with his family for their first Thanksgiving after George Sr.’s passing, and this new development with Georgie and Mandy’s marriage makes it even more poignant when you remember the episode “The Thanksgiving Decoupling.” Throughout The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon often joked about his late father, sometimes even making fun of his intelligence when he talked about him.
The strongest episode of Young Sheldon, titled “Funeral,” beautifully showed how much Sheldon loved and respected his father, despite his difficulty in expressing emotions. Surprisingly, a lighthearted moment – “The Thanksgiving Decoupling” – conveyed this feeling even more effectively than a heavier, dramatic plotline.
Sheldon’s surprising knowledge and enthusiasm for football later in life suggests a deeper connection with his father than he usually showed. While a scene of him becoming overly emotional about missing Thanksgiving with his father would have felt forced, inappropriate, and didn’t fit his personality.
Instead of a grand gesture, it was more touching and humorous to see Sheldon become interested in the sport his late father coached, especially during a Thanksgiving dinner. This moment beautifully showed his connection with George Sr. Because of this, the first Thanksgiving episode featuring Georgie and Mandy actually enhanced the already beloved festive episodes of The Big Bang Theory.
