House of the Dragon Season 3 First Footage Reveals Rhaenyra’s War Against the Show’s Best Villain

The first trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 is out, offering a great preview of what’s to come in the Game of Thrones prequel. Some viewers weren’t happy with how Season 2 ended, particularly the cliffhanger after so much build-up. The major naval battle, the Battle of the Gullet, has been moved to Season 3, meaning fans will have to wait longer to see the Targaryen civil war fully escalate. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra Targaryen is getting ready to make her play for King’s Landing.

The first look at the upcoming third season reveals the continuation of key storylines. Shown to the press at an HBO Max event in Brazil (reported by Omelete on X), the teaser focuses on the escalating conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons. Westeros is now clearly divided, with factions supporting either Rhaenyra or Aemond Targaryen, who is acting as Prince Regent due to his brother Aegon’s injuries. The footage also offers quick looks at other characters, including a scarred Aegon, Otto Hightower, Criston Cole, and Daemon Targaryen, who is gearing up for war. We also see Alicent Hightower embracing Aemond.

What To Expect From House Of The Dragon Season 3 (& When Will The Trailer Release?)

The preview is short on details, so it’s really just a glimpse of what’s to come. The show will continue to focus on the conflict between the ‘Greens’ and the ‘Blacks’ in its promotion. With Aegon and Larys Strong having left King’s Landing, Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar, will likely take a leading role in the Greens’ war efforts. This is good news for them, as Aemond has already proven himself to be a skilled and ruthless character willing to do whatever it takes.

The show House of the Dragon takes some surprising turns in its depiction of the fight for the Iron Throne, and isn’t always a direct adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. For example, the end of Season 1 showed Alicent seemingly giving up King’s Landing to Rhaenyra, a plot point that doesn’t happen in the book. It will be fascinating to see how this plays out, and what role Aemond – whom Alicent considered a problem child – will have in the unfolding events.

Promotional materials from Brazil reveal a change for Emma D’Arcy’s character, Rhaenyra Targaryen: she’s depicted with a weapon. Unlike the book version, where Rhaenyra doesn’t carry one, this new portrayal shows her actively preparing for war. This aligns with the show’s direction, as the character has expressed a desire to be more involved in the conflict, making it a welcome adaptation for fans.

Now that a teaser trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 has been shown, it likely won’t be long before it appears online. HBO has typically released teasers for the previous seasons around this time of year. The first teaser for Season 1 came out in October 2021, months before the show premiered in August 2022, and the first trailer for Season 2 arrived in December 2023, ahead of its June 2024 return. Given that Season 3 is expected in summer 2026, we should get a first look soon. The only potential change is that HBO also has A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to promote, which starts in January, potentially affecting how they market House of the Dragon. However, we can probably expect to see the footage before the year ends.

House of the Dragon Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on HBO Max.
