Macaulay Culkin’s Home Alone reboot

Among popular Christmas movies like Elf, Love Actually, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and countless versions of A Christmas Carol, Home Alone (1990) stands out as a favorite. The film launched Macaulay Culkin to stardom and earned an impressive $476 million despite a modest $18 million budget. A sequel followed in 1992, but Culkin later stepped away from acting for nearly a decade. Now 45 years old, the actor has recently proposed a reboot of Home Alone.

At a recent event, he was asked if he’d ever consider returning to the movies. While he wasn’t opposed to it, he brought up his idea for a reboot of Home Alone, explaining that…

I came up with this concept: a father – either widowed or divorced – is struggling to balance work and raising a child. He’s so focused on work that he’s neglecting his son, who is understandably upset. This leads to a situation where the son literally won’t let his father into the house, even setting traps. I see the house as a symbol of their strained relationship, and the story is about the father needing to rebuild trust and reconnect with his son emotionally.

It’s uncertain if a remake will happen, but the original director, Chris Columbus, has suggested the first film was a unique success that would be difficult to recreate. While he doesn’t seem interested in returning, the idea of a reboot is likely to appeal to studio executives looking for potential projects.
