A highly-regarded war film is leaving Netflix soon. War movies have always been a significant part of cinema, going back to the earliest films, and often deal with powerful themes like courage, loss, and what it means to be human. While Netflix has a good selection of war films, one standout – a darkly funny and critically acclaimed World War II movie by Quentin Tarantino – will no longer be available for streaming.
If you’re a Netflix subscriber and want to watch Inglourious Basterds, you’ll need to do so soon! This 2009 war film, directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, and others, will no longer be available on the streaming service after November 30th. The movie tells two connected stories set in France during World War II: one about a group of Jewish-American soldiers on a mission to kill Nazis, and another about a woman determined to avenge her family’s murder.
Inglourious Basterds Is a Groundbreaking War Film
Many consider Inglourious Basterds to be a masterpiece and the best film Quentin Tarantino has ever made, and it’s easy to understand why. The movie immediately grabs your attention with a stunning 20-minute opening scene – a truly unforgettable and expertly made sequence. This scene slowly builds intense tension through a conversation in a French farmhouse, introducing Christoph Waltz’s Oscar-winning portrayal of the chillingly charismatic Hans Landa and establishing the film’s dark, suspenseful atmosphere.
Following the initial scene, the film unfolds as Tarantino’s unique take on World War II. It blends over-the-top violence, dark humor, and isn’t concerned with strict historical accuracy—and the result is surprisingly effective. It’s a classic Tarantino film, skillfully mixing intense drama with self-aware comedy and memorable characters, like Brad Pitt’s captivating Lt. Aldo Raine.
The movie received eight Academy Award nominations and a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes (89% from critics), earning it a “Certified Fresh” designation. Director Quentin Tarantino himself considers it his best film, even calling it his “masterpiece” during an appearance on The Church of Tarantino podcast.
Where to Stream Inglourious Basterds After It Leaves Netflix?
I’m a huge fan of Inglourious Basterds, and I was really disappointed to see it’s not available on any streaming services except Netflix right now. That makes me worry it might disappear from streaming altogether! Luckily, you can still rent or buy it, and I’m hoping another streaming platform picks it up soon so I can easily watch it whenever I want.
