Zootopia Filmmakers Reveal Which Cult Classic Films to Watch Ahead of Zootopia 2

The filmmakers suggest watching certain movies to get the most out of the new sequel. Coming nine years after the first film, the sequel draws inspiration from beloved, classic movies.

Howard and Bush highlighted Lethal Weapon 2 and Toy Story 2 as sequels that thrived by focusing on developing their main characters, rather than just increasing the scale of action. As Bush explained, they studied successful sequels to understand what made some work better than others, looking for continuations of the story that resonated with audiences.

Howard also brought up Out of Sight, the film starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. Directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Scott Frank, based on a 1996 novel by Elmore Leonard, the movie received excellent reviews when it came out and is now considered a beloved, though often overlooked, classic in the crime thriller and comedy genres.

Producer Yvett Merino and Head of Animation Chad Sellers explained that the 2016 animated film served as a foundation for their work. Merino also mentioned Disney’s Robin Hood as inspiration for animating animals realistically. Story Head Carrie Liao and co-head David Vantuyle highlighted two key references: they looked to the gala scene in Beauty and the Beast for a grand ballroom party and The Fugitive for the dynamic of Nick and Judy investigating a mystery while on the run.

How Have Critics and Audiences Responded to Zootopia 2?

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 animated film, Zootopia 2, has been a huge success with both critics and moviegoers. It earned over $44 million in just the first day of its release, and that number is still growing.

The new movie Zootopia 2 is a hit with both critics and audiences. It earned a remarkable 94% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 97 reviews from professional critics. Viewers also love it, giving it a 95% “Verified Hot” score on Rotten Tomatoes, averaging over 500 user reviews.

Bushe hinted at how these ideas will connect to the bigger plot of Zootopia 2. He explained that the city of Zootopia is intentionally built to be fully connected – it’s actually the city’s core technology. And, he revealed, this will be a major plot point in the sequel, already woven into the story.

Zootopia 2 is in theaters now.
