5 PS2 Games You Forgot Were Awesome

The PlayStation 2 is still a favorite among gamers, right up there with the Nintendo GameCube, and it’s easy to see why. It boasted a huge collection of fantastic games, many of which were only available on PS2. A lot of players revisit those classic PS2 titles regularly, and some even purchase a console again just to relive those gaming memories. While certain PS2 games remain incredibly popular, many other excellent titles have faded into obscurity.

The PlayStation 2 had a fantastic library of games, including titles you could only play on that console and those available on multiple platforms. This list focuses mainly on PS2 exclusives, though I’ve included a few multiplatform games because of my personal memories of enjoying them on the system. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit 5 amazing PS2 games you might have forgotten about.

5) Soul Calibur 3

Previous Soul Calibur games were available on multiple consoles, but Soul Calibur 3 was only released for the PlayStation 2. While Soul Calibur isn’t entirely forgotten, it often gets less attention than other popular fighting games like Tekken and Mortal Kombat. The series hasn’t had a new release in a while, with the last one coming out in 2018. However, Soul Calibur 3 for the PS2 was a truly fantastic game.

Soulcalibur 3 was a PlayStation 2 exclusive and the final game in the series to get an arcade version. It boasts the biggest selection of playable characters in the entire Soulcalibur franchise, and each character has their own complete story mode. With lots of different ways to play and a huge cast, Soulcalibur 3 offers plenty of content to discover. Luckily, it’s coming to PS5 through PlayStation Plus soon, so you’ll be able to play it on current consoles!

4) Dance, Dance Revolution

While you’re more likely to find Dance, Dance Revolution in arcades today, it was hugely popular at home during the PlayStation 2 era. Players used a special dance mat and the console to play. Though DDR appeared on other systems, it first launched on the PS2, and many fans believe it played best there.

It’s a real shame that classic Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) games aren’t available on modern consoles. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of playing with a dance mat on a PS2, and newer dance games just don’t compare. Dance Dance Revolution is the PS2 game I miss the most, and I’m hoping it makes a comeback to consoles with a dance mat. Until then, I’ll have to stick to playing it on my friend’s PS2 and in arcades whenever I can.

3) Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance

I grew up playing Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, and it’s what got me hooked on Dungeons & Dragons. While it wasn’t just for PlayStation 2 – it also came out on Xbox and many other consoles later on – the original Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is fondly remembered by a lot of us as a PS2 game.

Every time I mention this game, someone always says it’s been years since they last played it. They usually then share happy memories of playing with friends or family on the same couch. Even though it’s not talked about much now, this game was a defining experience for me during the PlayStation 2 era, and I think it deserves more recognition.

2) Champions of Norrath

Snowblind Studios, later known as Monolith, also created Champions of Norrath. Unlike Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, this game was only available on the PlayStation 2. It’s set in the world of EverQuest and built using an improved version of the Dark Alliance engine, making it another standout title for the PS2.

Champions of Norrath is an RPG that takes place before the events of the EverQuest online games. It’s a fast-paced, action-focused game with some RPG elements, including a skill tree to customize your character. Considered one of the best action RPGs of its era, it still holds up well today. While Dark Alliance has been updated for modern systems, Champions of Norrath hasn’t, causing it to be overlooked. However, it remains a genuinely enjoyable classic action RPG.

1) Sky Odyssey

Okay, so everyone’s talking about Flight Simulator now, but let me tell you, back when I was a PS2 kid, Sky Odyssey was my jam! It was seriously cool – imagine Indiana Jones but you fly planes! You’d get sent on these crazy missions, piloting different aircraft, all to find hidden artifacts. It wasn’t just about flying, it was like being an aerial treasure hunter, and I loved it.

If you enjoyed flight simulator games on the PlayStation 2, you likely remember Sky Odyssey. However, it’s a bit of a hidden gem – many players may not even know it exists. It never received a sequel or a remake for newer consoles, so it’s been largely forgotten. But it deserves another look! Sky Odyssey stands out from other flight games because it combines difficult, obstacle-filled missions with RPG-style gameplay.
