Sorry, Wolverine, But This Is the X-Men’s Real Top Bad Boy

Wolverine perfectly embodies the tough, rebellious character within the X-Men. Unlike most of his teammates who are purely heroic, Logan is significantly more aggressive and dangerous. Having been created as a top-secret government weapon, he’s focused on eliminating those he deems deserving of punishment. He’s the X-Men’s go-to hero for difficult, morally questionable tasks, always ready to take on the dirty work. Despite being a prime example of this type of character, Wolverine isn’t actually the most morally complex or troubled hero on the team; that title belongs to another mutant.

Remy LeBeau, also known as Gambit, has always lived on the wrong side of the law. Similar to Wolverine, he’s fiercely protective of his own, but his methods often conflicted with the X-Men’s values. While both are rough characters, Gambit is a true master thief and a more dedicated criminal than Wolverine ever was. His personality and past make him the X-Men’s ultimate rebel, even more so than Wolverine – and it’s easy to see why.

A Master Criminal Versus A Man-Made Monster

Wolverine often refers to himself as a monster because his mutant powers link him to a primal, animalistic side. While he usually maintains control, he can succumb to his instincts and become a ferocious, deadly force. Though he was always quick to anger, his experiences with Weapon X drastically worsened this tendency. The torture and experimentation he endured stripped away a part of his humanity, and it took years for him to begin healing. Ultimately, the trauma he suffered wasn’t something he asked for.

Wolverine’s transformation into a deadly weapon was forced upon him, but Gambit actively chose his life as a thief. He was raised and trained from a young age by the Thieves Guild, quickly becoming exceptionally skilled. Though ultimately expelled due to internal conflicts and his romantic inclinations, Gambit continued to operate as a master thief, even working with the X-Men villain Mister Sinister to gain control over his abilities. Unlike Wolverine, who was a victim of circumstance, Gambit embraced a life built on theft and, for a long time, found satisfaction in it, as that was all he was taught was possible.

Remy still has a fondness for his past as a thief, even though he’s changed. Wolverine struggles with his nature but feels he has to live with it, while Gambit genuinely enjoys his work, despite regretting things he’s done. Ultimately, the key difference is that Gambit chose his path, which gives him a better chance at true redemption than Wolverine.

Red Eyes With a Heart of Gold

Wolverine became the person he is today through outside forces, so while he feels guilt over his actions with Weapon X, he isn’t truly responsible. He was heavily brainwashed. Gambit, on the other hand, willingly made his own choices. Though he hasn’t caused as much destruction as Wolverine, he actively stole from and harmed others. Becoming an X-Man gave Gambit the opportunity to atone for his past, creating a classic superhero redemption arc.

Superheroes generally show us what it means to be good, even when they stumble. While they might sometimes act selfishly or angrily, they ultimately represent our best qualities as they try to make a difference. Characters who begin as villains often have stories about turning their lives around. However, the path to redemption isn’t the same for everyone. Wolverine’s past actions weren’t truly his fault, but Gambit actively chose to be a criminal, and now he’s choosing to be a hero. He was a charming thief who also protected those in need, making him the X-Men’s most compelling reformed character and a truly great hero.
