James Gunn and Peter Safran are building a DC Universe that feels authentic and well-established, with impressive character designs in projects like Superman and Creature Commandos. While they seem open to exploring many ideas, it’s likely some classic costumes won’t be featured in the new franchise.
Even the biggest superhero fans have to agree that sometimes, a character’s costume just doesn’t quite work. I’m not saying these costumes are bad, but some are definitely a bit strange. Let’s be real, would we ever expect to see Wonder Woman wearing that old biker look again? Or Nightwing in his disco outfit? While the new DC Universe will probably come up with some cool designs, I’m pretty sure these seven outfits won’t be making an appearance.
7. Flash’s All In Era Outfit

While I don’t dislike the new look for Wally West (The Flash) in DC’s All In era, it’s quite a departure from his classic design. The costume now features a lot more black, especially on his legs, chest, and shoulders, instead of the usual red and yellow lightning bolt pattern. The additions to his mask, which look like long, curved antennae, are particularly unusual. It’s a bold new take on the character, but I suspect the DC Universe will eventually move towards a more familiar style.
6. Black Canary’s 80s Costume

I’m really excited to see Black Canary in the DCU, but as a long-time fan, I’m hoping they avoid her 1980s costume. The blue jumpsuit with the big black bird design was a major change for the character, and while I appreciate the idea of updating her look, that particular outfit just doesn’t work. I’m open to some changes to Black Canary’s appearance, but the DCU should definitely steer clear of that specific design.
5. Wonder Woman’s Biker Look

The 1990s saw a lot of changes in comic book character designs, and Wonder Woman was no exception. Her classic red, yellow, and blue outfit was replaced with a very ’90s-inspired look – a revealing black bodysuit and a short blue jacket. While I personally like the jacket, the rest of the costume isn’t my favorite. Many fans are hoping the new DC Universe will stick to Wonder Woman’s more recognizable and classic appearance, and hopefully, they’ll avoid this particular design.
4. Guy Gardner’s Warrior Design

Guy Gardner recently appeared in the new Superman movie, and his costume was updated to fit with the rest of the Justice League team – he actually looked great! While James Gunn clearly likes the DC comics from the late 80s and early 90s, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see Guy as his ‘Warrior’ persona. Instead of the usual green suit, this version of Guy was shown with a bare chest covered in red, blue, and yellow markings. It’s hard to picture Nathan Fillion fully embracing that look, isn’t it?
3. Nightwing’s Iconic ‘Discowing’ Suit

It’s almost certain we’ll see Nightwing (Dick Grayson) in the DCU, especially since he’s already confirmed for the upcoming Dynamic Duo movie. However, I highly doubt he’ll debut – or even regularly wear – his original, well-known costume. While the ‘Discowing’ outfit is definitely memorable and has a unique design, it seems unlikely a DCU project would make that his signature look. A quick nod to it might happen, but I don’t see it being a major part of his portrayal.
2. The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh

I surprisingly like this costume, even though it stands out from the others. The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh is very brightly colored – red, purple, and yellow – but it worked well in the comics during the “Batman R.I.P.” storyline, as it was created for Bruce Wayne’s alternate, more unpredictable personality. Despite how cool it is, it might be difficult for general audiences to accept or take seriously. I’d enjoy seeing this costume, but I don’t expect it to happen.
1. Superman’s Extremely ’90s Costume

The ‘90s were full of fashion choices we now question, and even Superman wasn’t immune! In the comic Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey, Clark Kent got a new costume for his rematch with Doomsday, and it included… a lot of pouches. It was basically armor layered over his usual suit, complete with yellow gloves, straps, a shoulder pad, and, you guessed it, more pouches. While James Gunn is likely brainstorming costume ideas for the Superman sequel, I’d bet good money we’ll see Superman Blue return before this outfit ever appears in the DC Universe.
