When Stranger Things 5 begins, the town of Hawkins still largely blames Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) for the events of the previous season. Introduced in Season 4 as the leader of the Dungeons & Dragons club—which includes Will, Dustin, Mike, and Lucas—Eddie quickly became a fan favorite. Though he tragically died in the Stranger Things 4 finale, his impact continues to be felt in the show’s final season.
Season five of Stranger Things picks up some time after the events of season four. Following Vecna’s actions, Hawkins is now under quarantine because portals to the Upside Down have opened throughout the town. Almost a year and a half after Eddie’s death, he’s surprisingly become a target of blame and resentment among the residents of Hawkins – a feeling that actually started while he was still alive.

Okay, so in Season 4, poor Eddie was already an outcast. A lot of the kids at school thought he was strange, mostly because he was really into Dungeons & Dragons. Then, when Chrissy Cunningham died – it turned out Vecna was behind it – Eddie was right there, and everyone immediately suspected him. He had to go on the run from the police, and it got way worse because Chrissy’s boyfriend, Jason, really turned the town against him. Jason basically started a full-on witch hunt, painting Eddie as this cult leader and even a Satanist just because Eddie ran the Hellfire Club. It was a total overreaction, and it just broke my heart watching it all unfold.
The townspeople blamed Eddie for Chrissy’s death, even though they’d become friends, and he joined the others in their search for Vecna. He and Dustin went into the Upside Down to create a diversion, but the plan quickly fell apart. Eddie bravely sacrificed himself to protect Dustin and give the group more time, drawing the deadly Demobat swarm to him where they killed him.
Even though Eddie won’t be back in Stranger Things 5, his impact will still be felt throughout the season.
Why Does Everyone Hate Eddie In Stranger Things 5?

Even after Eddie’s death in Season 4, most people in Hawkins still believed he was a murderer and the leader of a dangerous cult, wrongly blaming him for the deaths of Chrissy and others. The real killer, Vecna, remained hidden, and Jason’s efforts to ruin Eddie’s reputation had stuck with the town for the past year and a half.
The upcoming season of Stranger Things reveals that Eddie is still seen as a troublemaker in town, even though he’s passed away. This really bothers Dustin, who was Eddie’s best friend and was deeply affected by his death. Still mourning Eddie in Season 5, Dustin has become more aggressive and takes unnecessary risks as he tries to honor his friend’s memory.
Dustin was walking into the school hall when a group of bullies started picking on him for his Hellfire Club t-shirt. They had previously warned him about wearing anything with the Hellfire logo and now threatened him, even trying to tear the shirt off his back. Luckily, Mike, Will, and Lucas showed up to defend him.

Now that the bullies were dealt with, Dustin explained to his friends that he couldn’t stay silent while they continued to spread lies about the Hellfire Club and Eddie. He then escalated the situation by writing “Hellfire Lives” on the bullies’ locker. This backfired when the bullies confronted Dustin at Eddie’s grave, which they had vandalized with the message “Burn in Hell.” They threatened him, saying, “The Hellfire Club ends with you, Henderson, and it ends tonight,” before attacking him.
Because the town doesn’t know what really happened to Eddie, people remember him as a villain instead of the hero he actually was. Now, Dustin is trying to defend Eddie’s reputation, which makes him a target for the town’s anger. They mistakenly believe the Hellfire Club is a dangerous cult and think Dustin is still involved. They see him as someone trying to celebrate a murderer, but really, he’s just trying to honor his friend’s memory.
