HBO Max Is About To Lose an Underrated Dreamworks Movie

If you’re an HBO Max subscriber, don’t wait to watch a fantastic, but often overlooked, DreamWorks animated movie before it disappears from the service. While DreamWorks is known for huge hits, they’ve also made some lesser-known films that are real treasures. This particular movie came out in 2010, a busy year for the studio with the releases of both the first How to Train Your Dragon and the latest Shrek installment, Shrek Forever After.

Megamind is a funny animated superhero movie with a fantastic voice cast including Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt. It’s currently available on HBO Max, but will be removed from the streaming service on November 30th. The story follows Megamind, a supervillain who’s incredibly smart, and finds himself lost when he finally beats his superhero rival, Metro Man. When a new hero he creates decides to become a villain instead, Megamind has to quickly find a way to save the city.

Megamind Is a Slept-on Masterpiece

Despite flying under the radar when it was released, Megamind is a truly exceptional animated film and well worth watching. It cleverly turns the typical superhero story on its head by exploring what happens after the villain wins. This allows the movie to challenge simple ideas of good and evil, and it’s both hilarious and surprisingly touching as it follows the villain’s personal journey. Ultimately, Megamind is a smart, original film with a fantastic voice cast that asks what defines a villain when there’s no hero left to oppose.

Despite being a really well-made film, Megamind didn’t receive the recognition it deserved initially. While it earned a solid $321.9 million at the box office and a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it was outshined by bigger movies released around the same time, like DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, which became a huge success. Fortunately, Megamind has gained a dedicated fanbase over the years and recently found new popularity on streaming platforms, making its removal from HBO Max particularly disappointing.

Where to Stream Megamind After It Leaves HBO Max?

If you love DreamWorks’ Megamind, you’ll want to watch it on HBO Max soon, as it will be leaving the platform. Currently, it’s not available on any other streaming services, and it’s unclear where it will be available to stream next, though it can be rented or bought digitally. The newer Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate is streaming on Peacock.
