Best films released in the UK this month: December 2025

With 2025 nearly over, you might be making a list of your favorite movies of the year, but it’s probably best to wait a little longer before finishing it.

December will still see several big movie releases in the UK, including highly anticipated blockbusters like ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and potential award winners such as ‘Sentimental Value’ and ‘Marty Supreme’.

This fall also brings fun fantasy romance with ‘Eternity,’ the scary sequel ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,’ and a comedic revamp of ‘Anaconda.’ Plus, fans of Freida McFadden’s popular 2022 novel ‘The Housemaid’ will be thrilled to see it adapted into a movie starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney.

This month brings some exciting new films, including directorial debuts from major stars Scarlett Johansson with “Eleanor the Great” and Kate Winslet with “Goodbye June.”

This romantic comedy, directed by David Freyne, features Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner in a love triangle story set in the afterlife.

The story centers around Joan (Olsen), who has passed away and is given a week to choose how she’ll spend eternity. She’s caught between two loves: her husband, and a first love who died years ago and has been waiting for her.

It Was Just an Accident

Release date: Friday 5th December in cinemas

Jafar Panahi, a celebrated Iranian director, recently won the top prize – the Palme d’Or – at the Cannes Film Festival with his latest suspenseful film.

The story centers around a man who unexpectedly encounters someone he’s convinced tortured him in the past. However, the other man strongly denies it, causing the first man to question his own memories and beliefs.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

Release date: Friday 5th December in cinemas

Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Matthew Lillard are back for another installment of the scary movie based on the popular video game, where frightening robotic creatures cause chaos.

The movie follows 11-year-old Abby (Piper Rubio) who secretly goes back to visit the animatronics, unknowingly starting a frightening chain of events that uncovers the hidden and disturbing history of Freddy’s.

Fackham Hall

Release date: Friday 12th December in cinemas

Jimmy Carr, the comedian, helped write the script for this funny take on historical dramas. The show features a well-known cast, including Damian Lewis, Katherine Waterston, Tom Felton, and Thomasin McKenzie.

This series, reminiscent of Downton Abbey and set in the 1930s, centers around an unlikely friendship between a new porter and the youngest daughter of a prominent British family. Meanwhile, the family is struggling with a disastrous wedding as the eldest daughter marries her untrustworthy cousin.

Eleanor the Great

Release date: Friday 12th December in cinemas

Scarlett Johansson is trying her hand at directing with a new film. The drama centers on a 94-year-old Holocaust survivor, brought to life by actress June Squibb.

The story accompanies her as she relocates from Florida to New York following the loss of a close friend, joining a Holocaust survivor support group and sharing an experience that unexpectedly grows increasingly risky.

Goodbye June

Release date: Friday 12th December in cinemas (24th December on Netflix)

Kate Winslet makes her directorial debut with a Christmas drama featuring a talented cast.

The story follows a man and his four grown children as they deal with complicated family relationships when their mother’s health unexpectedly declines during the Christmas season.

Silent Night, Deadly Night

Release date: Friday 12th December in cinemas

Rohan Campbell, known for his role in Halloween Ends, will star in a new version of the classic horror film about a terrifying Santa Claus.

Campbell is Billy, a man haunted by a traumatic childhood event. Every Christmas, he dresses as a menacing figure and unleashes a violent spree, believing he’s delivering his own brand of justice.

Ella McCay

Release date: Friday 12th December in cinemas

In this new comedy-drama, Emma Mackey plays a hopeful politician. It’s the first film in 15 years from the celebrated writer and director James L. Brooks.

The story follows her journey as she faces challenges in her personal life and career, alongside a talented ensemble cast featuring Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Alfred Brooks, Jack Lowden, and Ayo Edebiri.

Avatar: Fire and Ash

The latest installment in James Cameron’s hugely popular Avatar series takes audiences to a previously unseen part of the world of Pandora.

The plot summary reveals that Jake and Neytiri’s family will face conflict with a new and hostile Na’vi tribe.

Sentimental Value

Following his acclaimed 2021 film, The Worst Person in the World, Norwegian director Joachim Trier delivers a deeply emotional family story that’s expected to be a strong contender for awards.

The movie stars Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning. It tells the story of a famous director (Skarsgård) who attempts to reconnect with his daughter (Reinsve) – an actress he hasn’t seen in years – by casting her in his new film.

Marty Supreme

Release date: Friday 26th December in cinemas

Timothée Chalamet is being predicted to receive an Oscar nomination for his performance in a new comedy-drama directed by Josh Safdie. The film, set in the 1950s, is a dramatized version of the story of table-tennis champion Marty Reisman.

Gwyneth Paltrow is back on screen after a five-year break, which is exciting, and she’s joined by Odessa A’zion, even Kevin O’Leary! The Housemaid

Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried star in the movie version of Freida McFadden’s popular novel, also titled the same name.

The story follows Sweeney, a young woman who takes a job as a live-in maid for a rich couple, and soon discovers they’re hiding dark secrets. Expect plenty of unexpected twists and turns!

Anaconda

Release date: Friday 26th December in cinemas

This new movie is a follow-up to the 1997 horror-comedy, and it’s being described as a self-aware reimagining of the original. Jack Black and Paul Rudd return as the main stars.

The movie follows Doug and Griff, two friends experiencing midlife crises, who decide to recreate their favorite childhood film in the Amazon rainforest. However, their fun project quickly turns dangerous when they encounter a massive, real anaconda, transforming the set into a life-or-death struggle.
