Apple TV+ is planning to expand its MonsterVerse universe with more from the hit live-action series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Season two will continue the story, jumping between the present day and events that happened during the films featuring Godzilla, Kong, and other massive creatures. Recent reports suggest Apple TV+ isn’t stopping there, and is developing additional content to delve even deeper into the history of the MonsterVerse.
Apple TV+ is developing a prequel series to Monarch that will explore the origins of the monster universe. According to Nexus Point News, Wyatt Russell will return as Lee Shaw in the show, which is set during the Cold War and will feature the emergence of kaiju amidst the tensions between the US and the Soviet Union. Joby Harold will serve as showrunner, with his partner, Tory Tunnell, as an executive producer. Production is expected to begin next summer, after the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters airs.
Whatever Happened to Lee Shaw?

Lee Shaw is a fascinating character with a unique history in the MonsterVerse. The role has been played by both Wyatt Russell, as the younger Shaw, and Kurt Russell, as the older version. We last saw young Lee Shaw drugged into a coma by the government, who wanted to silence him about past encounters with creatures like Godzilla. He remained unconscious for decades until the current Monarch team discovered him, now an elderly man played by Kurt Russell.
Even though a new prequel series is rumored to be in development, Wyatt and Kurt Russell are confirmed to return for season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. At the end of the first season, the older version of Lee was in a dangerous situation – trapped within the Hollow Earth and facing certain danger. If Lee Shaw manages to escape, his journey back home will undoubtedly be a compelling story, though details haven’t been officially revealed.
Besides Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and its possible prequel, Legendary’s MonsterVerse has more in store. The next big movie planned is Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which will be the third film to feature both Godzilla and Kong. As of now, details about the plot are still unknown.
