The first Zootopia movie was a huge success, earning over a billion dollars and becoming a beloved animated classic. Now, with Zootopia 2 in theaters, the franchise is proving popular once again. Experts predict it will earn between $125 and $150 million domestically over the five-day holiday weekend. Reviewers are especially impressed with how Zootopia 2 builds on the original’s story and explores important ideas about forgotten history, thanks to the introduction of new reptile characters. Because of this strong start and the detailed world created in the films, Disney is likely to begin working on a third Zootopia movie much sooner than the nine-year wait after the first one.
Warning: Spoilers below for Zootopia 2
The first Zootopia movie had a complete story, but the sequel intentionally leaves several questions unanswered, hinting at a larger, three-part story. Zootopia 2 introduces a complicated plot involving the Lynxley family and a secret past about Zootopia’s reptiles, and also sets up major conflicts that will likely be explored in future movies. These unresolved storylines suggest the next film will be full of suspense and could dramatically alter the way Zootopia operates.
3) Zootopia 3 Could Be About the Prison Breakers

In Zootopia 2, things get wild when Nick Wilde is wrongly thrown in jail. This leads to a huge escape, helped along by a conspiracy-loving beaver named Nibbles Maplestick. Although Nick manages to become a hero during the chaos, the escape lets over 200 dangerous criminals loose in the city. Among those escaping is Dawn Bellwether, the villain from the first Zootopia movie, who makes a quick appearance during the breakout.
I just left the theater after seeing Zootopia 2, and while the movie wraps up the main plot nicely with Nick and Judy (voiced brilliantly by Ginnifer Goodwin) going undercover to recapture Dawn, the ending definitely left me wanting more. The sheer number of escaped prisoners creates a massive problem for Zootopia, and it feels like a perfect setup for a Zootopia 3. I could easily see a third film focusing on the ZPD trying to round up all those escapees, but even more exciting, it would give the filmmakers a chance to really dig into the issues with the prison system itself – something this franchise has already hinted at with its smart commentary on prejudice and past injustices. It’s a great opportunity to explore those themes even further.
2) Zootopia 3 Will Likely Introduce Birds

The Zootopia movies are steadily broadening the types of animals featured, beginning with mammals and then adding reptiles. The ending of the second film strongly suggests birds will be the focus of the next installment. A quick shot of a feather falling past Judy’s window hints at their arrival. Directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush have explained that birds were initially left out of the first movie because it was difficult to realistically portray flying animals within the city’s design. With improved technology and a well-established world, introducing birds is expected to significantly change things in Zootopia.
Adding flying animals to Zootopia creates big problems for the city’s roads and police – a great starting point for a new movie. A sequel could show how Zootopia changes to accommodate citizens who fly, perhaps with new, towering neighborhoods that Nick and Judy struggle to adapt to.
1) The Third Zootopia Movie Could Pitch Key Allies Against Each Other

In Zootopia 2, Nick and Judy reconnect with Mr. Big and his family from Tundratown, with Mr. Big’s daughter, Fru Fru, now leading the criminal organization. The shrews become important allies, assisting Nick and Judy as they try to evade authorities after being wrongly accused by the Lynxley administration. While helpful, the film makes it clear the shrews are still criminals operating outside the law – they remain a powerful and active crime family.
Nick and Judy are committed police officers, but they’ve gotten too dependent on criminals to help them solve cases, putting their integrity at risk. A potential Zootopia 3 storyline could create a difficult situation where they’re asked to investigate or shut down Mr. Big’s criminal organization – the very same one that saved their lives. This would force them to choose between following the law and honoring their personal relationships, putting a huge strain on their partnership in a way no typical villain ever could.
Zootopia 2 is currently available in theaters.
