2025 was a significant year for film, largely due to the conclusion of the highly-regarded Conjuring horror series. The Conjuring: Last Rites was well-received by critics, with even TopMob praising it as a satisfying finale. As a longtime fan, I was disappointed when I finally watched it on HBO Max, as it didn’t live up to my expectations.
I consider The Conjuring films to be among the best in the horror genre, so I went into the final movie with high hopes for a memorable conclusion to Ed and Lorraine Warren’s story. Unfortunately, I was disappointed, largely because the movie focused too much on the main characters themselves.

I Found The Conjuring: Last Rites To Be Too Warren-Forward
I hadn’t thought about it before, but I realize I only watch The Conjuring movies for the haunted house cases themselves. I’m not interested in the story of the Warrens’ personal lives, so the focus on their family and daughter in the latest movie didn’t appeal to me at all. It actually frustrated me, because I was hoping for a thrilling horror investigation. I understand the desire to give these iconic characters a peaceful ending, but honestly, none of it was engaging. Because of this, I was disappointed, and I’d say this final movie is easily the weakest in The Conjuring series so far.

The Less I Could Focus On Ed And Lorraine In Conjuring Movies, The Better
I really enjoy Patrick Gibson and Vera Farmiga’s performances as the Warrens, so this isn’t about them. My issue is with the Warrens themselves – they’re a controversial topic in the paranormal community. Even though The Conjuring films have made them famous, many people have documented evidence suggesting they were not genuine.

The director of ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ shared his surprising reaction to comedian Matt Rife’s purchase of the house once owned by Ed and Lorraine Warren, as well as the Annabelle doll.
I wish The Conjuring: Last Rites had addressed the skepticism surrounding the Warrens and their investigations. Acknowledging their controversial reputation as paranormal investigators would have been a great addition to the film, but ultimately, they chose a different approach.
Because I’m familiar with the Warren family’s history, I found it difficult to enjoy watching a fictionalized account of their lives. I wish I could separate fact from fiction, but I couldn’t with The Conjuring: Last Rites. I’m glad others were able to enjoy the movie, though.
