What Happened to Henry Creel in the Cave & Why He Won’t Go in There in Stranger Things S5

Season 5 of Stranger Things still has a lot of questions to answer, especially regarding the Upside Down – the terrifying alternate dimension that’s been plaguing Hawkins, Indiana. The show revealed that Eleven unintentionally created a replica of Hawkins in 1983 while experimenting with another dimension at Dr. Brenner’s lab. But beyond that, almost everything about the Upside Down remains a mystery. It’s likely connected to Dimension X, the dimension Brenner was originally searching for, but how important that connection is remains unknown, as Vecna – the only one who has the answers – isn’t willing to share them.

In the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things, Henry Creel – now known as Vecna – is firmly in charge. He’s making friends with children throughout Hawkins, intending to use them to build a new reality, and Eleven and her group are struggling to find a way to stop him. Their only real hope lies with Max Mayfield, who is comatose in the real world but conscious within Vecna’s domain. She possesses crucial knowledge of a place Vecna fears, and it could be the key to defeating him.

Stranger Things 5‘s Cave Is Very Important in an Overlooked Spinoff

While Stranger Things is mainly set in a small town, the show’s story extends beyond the TV series. There are graphic novels, like one about Dustin and Susie, and comics that add details to important events. But the biggest expansion of the story is the Broadway play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This play goes back to 1959, focusing on Joyce, Hopper, and Bob when they were students at Hawkins High. They investigate a series of animal deaths and discover the Creel family is somehow involved, though they struggle to understand the full picture.

The core of the story in The First Shadow centers on Henry Creel’s life in Hawkins and what Dr. Brenner does with him after discovering Henry’s abilities. Similar to Eleven, Brenner exploits Henry for experiments, hoping to understand the potential of Dimeson X. However, Brenner didn’t find Henry randomly; he had been actively searching for him. While living in Nevada, Henry explored caves and unintentionally activated stolen technology from Brenner’s lab. This led to Henry being transported to another dimension, where he first encountered the Mind Flayer. This experience drastically changed Henry’s life, and he still remembers it vividly.

Vecna’s Past Could Be the Key to Bringing Him Down

The cave likely reminds Vecna of the forces that turned him into a monster, but he might also be avoiding it for another reason: caves are good for hiding things, and there’s a memory he’s desperate to bury. When he was Henry in Hawkins, he formed a connection with Patty Newby, Bob’s sister, and she showed him a glimmer of goodness within himself. This worried Brenner, who needed Henry to remain emotionally broken, leading to a clash that landed Patty in the hospital. Henry never saw her again, making it easier for him to sever all ties to the human world when he transitioned to the Upside Down.

The show Stranger Things hasn’t revealed anything about Patty yet, but Max and Holly might discover clues about her through Henry’s memories. If they can share this information with Hopper and their friends, they could find her and potentially convince her to help with Vecna. Right now, this seems like a viable plan because, even with Will’s connection to the hive mind, there doesn’t appear to be a definitive way to defeat Vecna permanently.

Stranger Things Season 5, Part 1 is streaming on Netflix.
