Netflix Users Are About To Get 2 Great HBO Crime Series (& Both Have Masterpiece Performances)

Good news for Netflix fans who don’t subscribe to HBO Max! Two compelling crime series, featuring impressive casts and acting, are coming to Netflix. While it’s happened before that shows from HBO Max appear on Netflix, it’s usually unusual since HBO Max rarely licenses its content. However, this time it’s a welcome surprise – both series will be available on both streaming services, and one is actually based on a previous Netflix documentary series.

Netflix will release two new series, Love & Death and The Staircase, on December 1st. Love & Death tells the story of Candy Montgomery, a woman living in Texas in the 1970s. Despite appearing to have a perfect life, Candy grows bored and unhappy, leading to an affair with a neighbor and ultimately, a shocking murder. The series stars Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Rabe.

You Won’t Want To Miss Either Series

Unlike the well-known Netflix docuseries, The Staircase is a fictionalized retelling of the same true crime story. Featuring Toni Collette, Sophie Turner, and Colin Firth, the series explores the disturbing case of Michael Peterson, a writer accused of murdering his wife, Kathleen. She was found dead at the bottom of their staircase in their North Carolina home. The show also delves into the creation of the documentary about the case and the lengthy legal struggles Michael Peterson faced afterward.

Both shows were a hit with audiences. Love & Death received an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Staircase earned a 92% Tomatometer score. One viewer gave Love & Death a perfect five stars, calling it “absolutely captivating.” They praised Elizabeth Olsen’s performance as deeply emotional and nuanced, and highlighted how the series draws you in by exploring not just the crime itself, but the motivations and consequences behind it. The viewer said they were completely hooked and couldn’t stop watching.

I was really hooked by The Staircase. One critic, Peg Aloi from Arts Fuse, pointed out that even though most people know what happened, the show still manages to build a ton of suspense. She also thought it might even make you question what you thought you knew if you watched the Netflix series. And Joyce Slaten from Common Sense Media called it both startling and compelling, saying it found a fresh angle on a case we’ve all heard about, thanks to some fantastic performances from the actors.
