Tubi Just Added One of the Movies That Caused Eddie Murphy To Take a Break From Acting

Eddie Murphy is famous for his hilarious roles in movies like Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America, but not every film he’s been in has been a success. Some of his less popular movies even had a negative impact on his career. Recently, the free streaming service Tubi added one of these critically disliked comedies to its November lineup – a film that led Murphy to take a break from acting.

Eddie Murphy had become a comedy icon, but after a series of poorly received films in the 2000s – including Norbit which began streaming on Tubi November 1st – he took a break from acting in 2011. These films earned him Razzie Award nominations and led him to re-evaluate his career path. He then made a successful return to acting in 2019 with Dolemite Is My Name.

The movie Norbit was widely panned by critics, receiving a mere 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming one of Eddie Murphy’s worst-reviewed films. It also earned nine nominations for the 2008 Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture. Murphy himself received a record-breaking five nominations and won three of them. Looking back in 2021, Murphy admitted that films like Norbit, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, and Meet Dave led him to realize he needed a break, stating he was making “bad movies.”

Norbit Is One of Eddie Murphy’s Worst Movies, but the Actor Doesn’t Think So

Simply put, Norbit isn’t a very good movie. It lacks depth and meaningful character development, relying instead on humor that often feels offensive, crude, and based on harmful stereotypes. The film’s jokes, particularly those directed at the character Rasputia and involving Eddie Murphy’s use of a fat suit, and its portrayal of the Black community haven’t held up well over time. Beyond the questionable humor, Norbit also failed to showcase the talents of its capable cast, including actors like Thandiwe Newton and Cuba Gooding Jr.

Even though Norbit was widely disliked and led to a break in his acting career, Eddie Murphy still has a soft spot for the movie. He recently told Speedy Morman of Complex that he genuinely enjoys it, despite it often being listed among his worst films. Murphy was surprised by the negative reaction and the film’s Razzie nominations, feeling it wasn’t that bad and that critics were simply being unfair. He continues to find parts of Norbit funny and actually considers Holy Man (1998) and Pluto Nash (2002) to be even weaker films.

Other Comedy Movies Now on Tubi

If you’re in the mood for a comedy and want something other than Norbit, Tubi has you covered.
