Just over four months after the release of James Gunn’s Superman in theaters—launching the DC Universe’s film slate—James Field’s Superman: The Art and Making of the Film offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the movie was made. I recently received a copy and can confidently say it’s a great gift for fans of the film, especially with Christmas coming up.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to get my hands on Superman: The Art and Making of The Film, and it totally delivered! It doesn’t try to be the movie, just enhances the experience of watching it, which is exactly what a companion book should do. And honestly, at $50, it’s a steal! These big, beautiful coffee table books usually cost a lot more – the Thunderbolts one that came out earlier this year was $100, and some are even pricier. It’s great to see something so well-made being actually accessible to fans like me.
Superman: The Art and Making of the Film Is A Great Buy For Fans

As the first film in the new DC Universe, the book begins with an overview of how the franchise was created – including introductions from James Gunn and a foreword by David Corenswet. While this initial look is brief, it establishes the book as more than just a guide to Superman. The majority of the book then offers a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, from its early ideas to casting, filming, and everything in between. It highlights the contributions of many creative people who might not usually get recognition. You’ll find fascinating details about the costumes, set designs, and the overall world-building, which are great for fans of this universe or anyone interested in the filmmaking process. With the increasing use of AI, books like this – which showcase human creativity – feel especially important.
The book also beautifully showcases the art that brought the film to life, including early concept art and alternative designs for characters like the monsters and the otherworldly imp who attack Metropolis. We also hear directly from the artists behind the costumes and the city of Metropolis itself, and learn how director James Gunn collaborated with them. This makes the book more than just a collection of pretty pictures – it’s a real look behind the scenes at the creative process.
My main criticism of Superman: The Art and Making of The Film is that it doesn’t feature as much concept art as I’d hoped. I would have loved to see more of the initial designs for the main characters, but that’s likely just me being very interested in how movies are made. Also, because James Gunn shares so much information online and after a film is released, a lot of the details in the book weren’t new to me. However, the book still provides a solid look behind the scenes, especially for those who didn’t closely follow all the updates. I definitely did discover some new things while reading it.
