Tim Burton is known for directing big Hollywood hits, but his recent film, now available on Paramount+, isn’t appealing to all viewers. He’s been a celebrated director since the early 1980s, creating iconic original movies like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. He’s also taken on remakes before, including 2001’s Planet of the Apes and the Addams Family series Wednesday. In 2005, he revisited another classic, resulting in one of his most controversial films to date.
Tim Burton’s 2005 film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has a strong 83% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of his best-received movies. However, audiences haven’t been as impressed, giving it a lower 51% score – placing it among his least favorite films with viewers. Based on Roald Dahl’s classic 1964 children’s book (previously adapted into the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder), the movie began streaming on Paramount+ on December 1st. It stars Johnny Depp as the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka, who invites five children, including young Charlie, to explore his magical chocolate factory after they find golden tickets.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Is One of the Most Divisive Movies in Tim Burton’s Filmography
While Charlie and the Chocolate Factory earned $475 million worldwide, it sparked a lot of debate. Critics generally liked that it stayed closer to the original book and appreciated its darker, more visually striking style. However, many viewers felt it was a significant and disturbing change from the lighthearted feel of the 1971 movie. A major source of disagreement was the portrayal of Willy Wonka. Johnny Depp’s version was a socially awkward and troubled man, a stark contrast to Gene Wilder’s charming character. The 2005 film also delved deeply into Wonka’s past with lengthy flashbacks, shifting the story’s focus away from Charlie’s uplifting adventure and onto Wonka’s own problems.
I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when it first came out, and it definitely did well in theaters and still gets watched on streaming, especially with the new Wonka movie getting everyone excited about the story again. But honestly, it hasn’t held up as well as I’d hoped. It seems like a lot of people don’t enjoy it as much now as they used to. In fact, a recent report showed it’s actually lost a lot of fans – it had one of the biggest drops in ratings of any movie released around that time, going down over 18% since its original release!
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ added a bunch of new movies on December 1st! Along with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, subscribers can now enjoy films like Addams Family Values, the Beverly Hills Cop series, Forrest Gump, and GoodFellas. They also added Failure to Launch, Inglourious Basterds, and Paddington to their streaming library.
