Miss Universe Fátima Bosch Addresses Claim Her Pageant Win Was Rigged

Fátima Bosch is learning that heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Only two weeks after being crowned Miss Universe on November 21st, the former Miss Mexico addressed rumors that her win was unfair. These rumors surfaced after a video went viral showing pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil calling her unintelligent.

Bosch quickly dismissed the idea that her recent viral popularity helped her win, stating in a December 2nd interview with Good Morning America that she put in the same amount of work as all the other contestants.

Honestly, when that judge, Omar Harfouch, started claiming there was a ‘secret vote’ and calling her a ‘fake winner’ – can you believe the nerve?! – she basically said he was just doing it for the drama. Like, he needed the spotlight! It was so obvious, and I was so proud of her for not letting him get to her. She handled it perfectly, honestly. He just couldn’t handle her winning, I swear!

“If he wanted more followers on Instagram,” she said. “He should get into a show, a TV show maybe.”

Regarding Harfouch’s claim that Miss Universe co-owner Raúl Rocha had “business ties” to the father of the competition’s winner, she strongly denied the allegation.

I was so shocked to hear people suggesting my dad was involved! It’s just ridiculous. Honestly, the idea of buying a crown, especially for Miss Universe, is insane. Like, you might find one at Walmart, but not when we’re talking about a competition of this level. It’s just not happening.

The Miss Universe organization refuted claims made by Harfouch about a hidden voting system. In a statement released on November 19th, just before Bosch was crowned, they stated – as reported by BBC – that no outside group was permitted to assess contestants or choose the finalists.

Despite the controversy, some participants chose to separate themselves from it. Olivia Yacé, who finished as fourth runner-up in the pageant, gave up her title on November 21st, explaining that she needed to stay true to her beliefs in respect, dignity, excellence, and equal opportunity.

Yacé has announced her resignation as Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, and stated she will no longer be involved with the Miss Universe Committee. She expressed deep gratitude and respect in her announcement.
