Just one day after its release, Troll 2, the follow-up to the popular Netflix monster movie Troll, is already getting good reviews. The original Troll, which premiered in 2022 to positive feedback, became Netflix’s most-watched film not originally made in English. It tells the story of people trying to stop a giant troll from destroying everything.
Now, three years later, a sequel called Troll 2 has just been released on Netflix.
I’m a huge fan of Troll 2, and it’s great to see it currently has a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! Most critics seem to really enjoy it, calling it a fun watch. Of course, not everyone loves it – some think it doesn’t live up to the original and question if a sequel was even necessary, but I disagree!
Despite being widely considered a bad movie, Troll 2 currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score above 60%, which means it’s considered ‘Fresh’ for now. It’s still too soon to say if that will last, though.
Released just on December 1st, Troll 2 doesn’t have enough audience reviews yet to get a Popcornmeter score. However, initial reactions from fans mirror those of critics – some love it, while others are disappointed.
The original Troll movie received positive reviews, earning an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, while audiences gave it a 50% score. The second Troll film saw a significant drop in critical approval, with its Tomatometer score falling by 25 percentage points.

The movie Troll featured Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, and Gard B. Eidsvold. Emily Goss, Kieran Regan, Austen Moret, and Richard Cansino dubbed the film into English. All four of those actors reprised their roles in Troll 2, joined by Sara Khorami as a new character, Marion.
Roar Uthaug, known for directing films such as Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander, The Wave, and Cold Prey, directed the sequel. Espen Aukan wrote the screenplay again, while Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud returned as producers.
When a new troll emerges and causes chaos, Nora Tidemann (Wilmann), Andreas Isaksen (Falck), and Kris Holm (Pettersen) are once again thrust into action in Troll 2.
In this movie, the danger is bigger and more serious than before. The team is racing against the clock to stop a devastating outcome caused by the troll.
Given the success of Troll, a sequel was expected. Whether Troll 2 will be as well-received remains to be seen, but Netflix has had success with monster movies like the recent Frankenstein, suggesting this new film could also be a hit.
