Every Unforgivable Curse Used In The Harry Potter Movies (& By Who)

Magic makes everyday life easy for witches and wizards. At Hogwarts, Harry Potter and his friends learn spells like Wingardium Leviosa, which makes things float, and Expelliarmus, used to disarm opponents. However, the wizarding world isn’t always safe, so students also take Defence Against the Dark Arts to learn how to protect themselves from dangerous magic. While the class seems to have trouble keeping a teacher, it proves incredibly important, ultimately preparing a generation of students for the Second Wizarding War.

The central conflict begins when Voldemort returns and targets Harry. This time, he’s more ruthless, allowing his Death Eaters to freely use the Unforgivable Curses against anyone who opposes them. While the movies don’t feature these dangerous spells as often as the books, they still appear quite a bit. Here’s a breakdown of every Unforgivable Curse used in the Harry Potter films and which characters cast them.

8) The Death of the Potters

Everyone in the wizarding world knows Harry Potter as “the Boy Who Lived” – the baby who miraculously survived an attack by the evil Lord Voldemort. Sadly, his parents, James and Lily Potter, weren’t so fortunate; they died defending Harry when Voldemort used the deadly Killing Curse. Although the full attack isn’t shown on screen, the movies feature a flashback showing Voldemort killing Lily with this signature dark magic spell.

7) “Mad-Eye Moody” Shows Off The Curses

Harry doesn’t find out about the Unforgivable Curses – the most dangerous spells in the wizarding world – until his fourth year at Hogwarts. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Mad-Eye Moody, demonstrates all three curses in a disturbing lesson, using a harmless scorpion as his subject. While it’s later revealed that Barty Crouch Jr. was actually impersonating Moody, it doesn’t make the demonstration any better for the scorpion.

6) Viktor Krum’s Nightmare

During the Triwizard Tournament in The Goblet of Fire, Viktor Krum falls victim to the Imperio curse, a powerful mind-control spell. This puts him in a dreamlike state where he feels no pain or emotion, and the Death Eaters manipulate him to try and get Harry to a Portkey. Unlike some wizards, Krum is unable to resist the curse’s control and becomes a pawn in their plan.

5) Voldemort Gets His Revenge

When Harry was a baby, he defeated Voldemort, but things changed in The Goblet of Fire. After being transported to a graveyard, Harry comes face-to-face with Voldemort, who angrily tortures him with the Cruciatus Curse. Unfortunately, Harry’s night quickly goes from bad to worse.

4) Harry Tries To Cast Crucio

Although Harry doesn’t like Crouch Jr., he did learn from the information the villain shared in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. After witnessing Sirius Black’s death, Harry seeks revenge on Bellatrix Lestrange and attempts to curse her with Crucio. He manages to knock her down, but struggles to fully execute the spell, and is told he needs to truly want to cause harm – a comment that ironically seems to hinder his attempt.

3) Snape’s “Betrayal”

When Dumbledore died, Snape used the Killing Curse, seemingly to prove his loyalty to Voldemort. However, Dumbledore had actually asked Snape to kill him, as he was already dying. This act of mercy, though appearing treacherous, ultimately helped the Order of the Phoenix move closer to defeating Voldemort.

2) Harry Does Whatever It Takes

Harry, Ron, and Hermione are determined to find the Horcruxes, and their search leads them to believe one is hidden in Bellatrix’s vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank. They attempt to access it with Hermione disguised as Bellatrix, but the goblin they deal with, Bogrod, is uncooperative. Desperate, Harry uses the Imperius Curse to control him, a decision he regrets. Later, as the curse weakens deep within the bank, Ron has to cast it again to maintain control.

1) Avada Kedavra Always Shows Up

The Killing Curse appears frequently throughout the Harry Potter films, even if it isn’t always the main focus. Here’s a rundown of the most important times it’s used in the series.

  • Voldemort kills Frank Bryce in The Goblet of Fire
  • Peter Pettigrew kills Cedric Diggory in The Goblet of Fire
  • Bellatrix kills Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Voldemort kills Charity Burbage in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
  • A Death Eater kills Hedwig in The Deathly Hallows Part I
  • Voldemort kills Mykew Gregorovitch in The Deathly Hallows Part I
  • Voldemort kills the part of himself living inside of Harry in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II

The Harry Potter movies are streaming on Peacock.
