Although details about The Batman Part II are scarce, a 2017 Netflix movie might offer a hint of its visual style. A standout feature of The Batman was its striking and immersive cinematography.
Let me tell you, the visuals in this film are stunning. Gotham City has never looked this good – it felt truly immersive and expansive, like stepping right into the world. A huge part of that is thanks to the incredible work of Greig Fraser, the cinematographer. He really brought Gotham to life in a way that’s both clear and captivating. It’s easily some of the best work I’ve seen all year.
Before his work on The Batman, Fraser contributed to films such as Zero Dark Thirty, Rogue One, and Dune: Part One. Following The Batman, he’s worked on visually impressive projects like The Creator and Dune: Part Two. However, he won’t be involved with The Batman Part II.
The Batman 2 Will Be Shot By Mindhunter Cinematography Erik Messerschmidt
Fraser won’t be returning as the cinematographer for The Batman Part II. Fortunately, Erik Messerschmidt will be taking over, and he’s already known for his excellent work, particularly on the popular Netflix series Mindhunter.
The series Mindhunter is based on a 1995 true crime book. It was created by Joe Penhall and brought to life with the help of acclaimed director David Fincher, who also served as showrunner and directed many of the episodes. The show was a critical and popular success, earning a 97% rating from critics and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Mindhunter’s Cinematography Is A Masterpiece On Its Own
This true-crime series is remarkable, not only for its compelling story and the strong performances – especially from Jonathan Groff – but also for its beautiful cinematography. Every shot feels carefully considered, enhancing the emotional impact of each moment. Even ordinary scenes are visually striking, thanks to the director of photography’s ability to find beauty in everything.
Erik Messerschmidt is an Academy Award-winning cinematographer, having received the Oscar in 2021 for his work on the film Mank. Though the departure of Greig Fraser will be felt on The Batman Part II, Messerschmidt is a highly respected and talented filmmaker in his own right.
If you’re at all wondering whether Greig Fraser can bring that same incredible, atmospheric look to the next Batman film, let me tell you, you need to watch Mindhunter. It’s not just a brilliant show in its own right, but it really gives you a feel for the kind of visuals we can expect when The Batman Part II arrives in 2027. Honestly, it’s a perfect preview of his style and what he’ll bring to Gotham!
